This year has been a little light on new Marvel content, so the LEGO® Marvel theme continues to seek inspiration for new sets from past MCU eras. The Infinity Saga, in particular, has provided the LEGO Marvel Design Team with plenty of moments to replicate in LEGO form. This particular set transports us back to 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. In the opening moments of the film, the Avengers descend upon the HYDRA Research Facility in Sokovia. This small new LEGO Marvel set is inspired by that moment. Here’s a closer look at the Iron Man & Iron Legion vs. Hydra Soldier set.

The main element of the set is a HYDRA battlement. During the opening of Age of Ultron, the Avengers battle through the snowy wilds of Sokovia edging closer to Von Strucker’s castle. Along with way they are faced with HYRDA forces. The battlement features a pair of gun turrets which flank a centralised stud shooter gun. It’s a rather generic piece of scenery. It’s a shame the set doesn’t offer the ability to add the minifigures in fun ways via transparent display rods.
The set features four Minifigures including the Iron Man Mark XLIII. This is an updated version of the suit and it uses the newer version of the helmet, with a flip-up face plate. The two Iron Legion minifigures have been updated. They now use the single helmet piece and have a tweaked design for their bodies. Finally, the set also includes a generic HYDRA Trooper. It’s the first time this style of HYDRA agent has appeared in a set. It almost feels like it’s a robot, as the character is kitted out in its protective gear, including a cover face. If nothing more, it introduces some conflict into the set.
It’s not a very exciting set. Its play functions are limited to a pair of stud shooters and the Minifigures are nothing exciting. The Iron Legion have featured in past sets, but I suppose they are the biggest allure of the set, due to their generic, army-building possibilities. It just feels a little too much like a slightly overpriced ‘battle pack’. Simply adding a few of the transparent display rods to make it a little more dynamic, would have elevated the set and warranted the price point. I suppose at the very least it offers a slightly more affordable set based on Age of Ultron compared to the larger Avengers Assembled: Age of Ultron set.
