76280: Spider-Man Vs. Sandman: Final Battle Review

The MCU is full of iconic moments, but few have managed to give the ‘portals’ Avengers: Endgame a run for its money. That is until the third movie in the Spider-Man ‘Home’ trilogy. After Doctor Strange’s spell goes wrong, multiverses collide and Sony’s previous Spider-Man universes officially become part of the wider MCU. The three Peter Parkers united to stop villains from past films. This set is also an expansion to another Spider-Man: No Way Home set from last year and is also a set in its own right. Here’s a look at the Spider-Man Vs. Sandman: Final Battle set.

The set is very similar to the Spider-Man Final Battle set, it’s just not as big or as elaborate. It has the same black disc base, upon which the scene is built. As mentioned this set is similar to its larger companion set so it has the same sort of scenery in the form of some scaffolding and an awkwardly placed yellow girder. Although this juts out in a slightly odd way, it’s used as an anchor point for a magic portal. This is built in the same way as other Marvel sets, offering a nice line of consistency as well as a place to mount one of the emerging villains.

The main part of the set is a brick-built version of Sandman. In No Way Home, Flint Marko transforms into a sand-based creature. This is built similarly to some of the many Marvel buildable characters which have included Spider-Man, Iron Man, Venom and Captain America. It’s the perfect scale for this set and the printed head plate used on all these sorts of characters looks great. It does have various points of articulation in the arms and the two different-sized hands. Although I must say the surrounding scenery does limit its movement slightly. I would assume this is less of an issue when the set is combined with the Spider-Man Final Battle set.

The set includes three minifigures, this version of Spider-Man has appeared in two other sets, both based on No Way Home. Other characters are unique to this set and complete the line-up of villains featured in the film. The Lizard, from the Amazing Spider-Man film, makes his LEGO® debut and uses the inner dino tail. It may seem odd that it simply uses a standard minifigure head, but this matches the design of the character from the film. Although it does look a little bit like goombas from the ill-fated Super Mario Bors. film. Electro is a little more elaborate with various yellow bolt elements attached to him via a back element and action pegs in his hands. The print detail on his torso is great. Above all, it’s nice to have the complete line-up of characters from this particular scene in the film.

The set can be used as an expansion of the Spider-Man Final Battle set released last year. I would show you what they look like combined, but I have no idea where I’ve put the other set. So here’s what it looks like from the product material. As you can see you can pop off the covering on the head of the Statue of Liberty and then remove the Sandman figure from the bases of this set. It can then be slotted into the top of the other set. This perfectly recreates the moment the three Spider-Men try to take down the multiverse foe. As I’ve said with both the Spider-Man Final Battle and Endgame Final Battle sets, I am more than happy to wait far beyond the film release for sets like these that are accurate to the films they are inspired by. The Spider-Man Vs. Sandman Final Battle set is available now.
