It’s fair to say that when Avengers: Endgame was released the accompanying LEGO® Marvel sets were extremely disappointing. The sets were loosely based on the film, partly due to keeping the closing moments of the Infinity Saga under wraps. It wasn’t until long after the film’s release that we have been treated to LEGO sets which better reflect moments from the film. That’s certainly the case with this newly released LEGO Marvel set. The Endgame Final Battle set celebrates the female heroes of the battle with Thanos and offers a unique displayable diorama depicting that moment. The climatic final battle during Avengers: Endgame, remains a momentous cinematic moment. It brought together countless heroes from multiple Marvel films to face off against Thanos and his vast Chitauri army. As key characters each had their moments, at one point the female heroes, unofficially dubbed A-Force, mounted a focused attack on the big purple guy. That moment in the film has been immortalised in this set.
The scene may seem like a random mismatch of elements and that’s largely true but the way they are combined cleverly conveys the destruction caused to the Avengers Compound during the battle. The most prevalent aspect of the scene is a mangled column which is topped by a portal. Next to this is a shorter tower featuring the Avengers ‘A’ logo. There’s also the back of Luis’ ugly brown van, complete with the Quantum Tunnel. What I love about all the little details, such as the random rods that have 1×2 rounded plates on them, they perfectly recreate exposed rebar. What is less appealing are the stickers, although they add extra damage details, the white background of the stickers is a different shade to the white tiles they are placed on.
The base is built in three sections which are connected together and when they are, they form a disc-like display upon which the scene is formed. There’s a surprising amount of detail crammed into such a small space. Some of which can only be seen when you split the display base open. Here you’ll find hidden details such as an Infinity Stone, Thor’s Hammer and Captain America’s shield. There’s even a rat clambering over the dashboard of Luis’ van. Technically this doesn’t take place during the battle but it’s still a nice Easter Egg. There are various points around the set which can be used to mount the various characters. Thanos stands dead center of the set and Valkyrie’s horse has a spot on the tallest stack of rubble. The rest of the characters can be moved around thanks to a couple of Technic axle connector points and the cool new curved transparent rods, which can slot into them.
Due to similarities with a Marvel comic book called A-Force, in which a team of female Marvel characters join forces, the same moniker has been unofficially used to describe the moment these characters come together. There are several female Marvel heroes included in the scene which takes place during Endgame’s final battle. Not all of them are included in the set but there’s still an impressive line-up, even though many of them have appeared in other sets. Captain Marvel, Okoye, Shuri and the Wasp have each appeared in other LEGO Marvel sets. Wanda Maximoff and Thanos are technically unique, although Wanda’s torso and Thanos’ body elements have been used in a previous set. That leaves Valkyrie as the only truly unique minifigure. Something which is also the case for her winged steed. This uses a standard LEGO horse element with the addition of a pair of white wings. Both the horse and wings appear in pure white only in this set. It’s a shame the minifigures aren’t a little more detailed, especially as they all sport plain legs. But they still capture the appearance of each character.
Overall
This is the perfect example of how displayable sets can be done. The self-contained scene is packed with detail and an impressive line-up of characters. It features a few great details that help recreate the twisted wreckage of the destroyed Avengers Compound. It’s also nice to see a set focused on the female heroes of the Marvel universe, especially as it was also a special moment in the film. Of course, it’s missing a couple of characters, some of whom appear in other sets, so it’s possible to expand the set, should you own them. It’s a nice set and hopefully, the start of similar sets, even if we have to wait for them long after the films they are based on are released.
