Marvel has many iconic characters, most of their classic heroes and villains have come to the forefront thanks to the various MCU films. From the comic book era, Spider-Man could be considered Marvel’s poster child. But for a certain group of kids, the 90s animated X-Men series was a special moment in Marvel history. It tells the story of the mutants and is so beloved, that the series is being revived on Disney+. There are many X-Men characters but none have as much of an impact as James Howlett, better known as Wolverine. The character first appeared in 1974 and has since appeared in the live-action X-Men films from Fox. Now the mutants have been brought under Disney’s Marvel banner they are slowly being brought into the MCU. But before that, Wolverine will appear in the animated X-Men ’97 series. Which also acts as inspiration for this new LEGO Marvel set – Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws.

The LEGO Marvel theme has been offering interesting sets intended to create unique displayable LEGO builds. These have included Thor’s Hammer, Captain America’s Shield and both the Nano and Infinity Gauntlets. Those disembodied hands continue with a recreation of Wolverine’s Adamantium-infused claws. There is a brief history of Wolverine in the instructions along with a quote from the set’s designer. Although light on detail, this does offer an updated look at the new animated version of Wolverine ahead of X-Men ’97’s debut, later this year.
Due to the displayable nature of the set, the build begins with a black display plinth. This matches the design of numerous other sets including the Gauntlets and helmets. The base also acts as the internal structure of the hand. Much of the outer detail of the gloved hand is then clad to it. If you’ve built any of the similar displayable sets, the interior part of the build is surprisingly complex, I’d say that less so is the case with this set.
Unlike the two gauntlet sets, Wolverine’s hand is particularly simple, after all it’s a blue-gloved hand. Obviously, it also features three long claws that slot into the three notches on the knuckles of the hand. If for some reason you’d want to display the set minus the claws, then you can. Each of the digits of the hand can positioned to recreate Logan’s claw-based attack.
Overall
Wolverine is a much-loved character and thanks to those Adamantium claws, he has a unique appearance to boot. Unfortunately, the clawed hand alone isn’t as impactful. You can instantly tell what the set has been inspired by and it does provide an interesting display piece. It’s just not as exciting as the other similar sets and does have a slightly higher price point than I think it should. That being said it looks great alongside those similar sets and provides a unique addition to the ever-growing collection of Marvel props. One thing I really appreciate is the fact it features the same sort of display stand as other sets. This uniform design really makes the display of the sets far more visually pleasing. But most of all, I love that we are finally getting more sets inspired by the X-Men. This particular group of Marvel characters offers a great pool of characters and source material to draw inspiration from. The set is available now and you can watch the original animated X-Men series now on Disney+ with X-Men ’97 due to stream later this year.
