Black Panther has become an immensely popular Marvel character. The 2018 film introduced an all-new audience to this important aspect of the MCU. In turn, T’Challa has appeared in plenty of different LEGO® sets, with most of them being connected to the many Marvel Cinematic Universe outings. This is one of the first sets to feature Black Panther, which isn’t inspired by the movies. But does Black Panther result in a good Mech Armor set?

Super Heroes often wear some pretty outrageous costumes, in turn, these result in great looking toys. Black Panther doesn’t follow this trait, with T’Challa’s super heroes guise mostly black. But this lends itself surprisingly well for a suit of Mech Armour. The simple nature of Black Panther’s suit may mean the armour lacks any bells and whistles, but this works in its favour. The suit has plenty of points of articulation, allowing you to capture Black Panther’s athletic prowess.
It may not have sword claws, stud firing blasters or shields, but the Black Panther Mech Armour does a couple of neat features. There’s a printed element in the chest plate, which features T’Challa’s claw pendant necklace. This is joined by a seemingly odd screen, which is mounted in front of the area where the minifigure is placed. Despite it appearing out of place, it actually looks quite cool and ties nicely to the technological advancements Wakanda is known for. It just lacks print detail.
Although the various versions of Black Panther have been fairly similar due to the nature of the character, the version featured here is unique. It has a design that is quite close to the one found in the 2016 Civil War set. It also features an alternate head, which is styled after the T’Challa Star-Lord variant from the Marvel Studios Minifigure series. Oddly, none of the other characters in the Mech Armour sets offers unmasked heads. I guess the love for Chadwick Boseman, especially since his death, has connected fans to T’Challa just as much as Black Panther.
Review Round-up
This Mech Armor suit set is the perfect example of how simple they can be, without the need for excessive add-ons or weapons. Black Panther’s strength is his Vibranium-infused suit and the Mech Armour is merely an extension of that. I thought the screen section would look odd compared to other sets in the series, but it’s just enough added flair without feeling unnecessary. It’s nice to have a unique minifigure, especially as it also includes an alternate head.
