76168: Captain America Mech Armour Review

He may be a super soldier, infused with great strength and the ability to fling a shield, but even the wholesome Steve Rodgers can upgrade his ‘superness’ with a mech suit. He joins the likes of Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Iron Man and Thor, who have each been given an armoured mech suit in this range of pocket money friendly LEGO® Marvel Super Heroes sets. But how does this compare to other similar sets in the Marvel Mech Armour Collection? Let’s see what the set has to offer in another 2021 set review.

The Build

Each of the Mech Armour suits follows a similar style of build, with various jointed sections creating a mechanized suit. Flipping down the chest plate reveals a section to place the Minifigure pilot. But of the three characters in this latest wave, the Captian America version is probably the least detailed. Which I guess is to be expected as they are inspired by their character’s costume. That’s not to say it’s not as good as the Miles Morales or Thor Mech Armour sets.

The oversized shield adds a lot to the set and when combined to the highly poseable nature of the mech, you can get some rather patriotic poses going on. I also like that the shield can be fixed to both the hand so it looks like it’s being held as well as being connectable to the back of the mech suit. It may not have as many bells and whistle compared to the other two sets but I rather like the simpleness.

The Minifigure

Although not as exciting as the unique Thor and Miles Morales Minifigures in the other two new Mech Armour sets, the Captain America Minifigure still has some appeal. Until recently, the Captain America Minifigures had used print to capture Steve’s helmet. This changed in 2019 with the introduction of a new element to represent the helmet, which made the Minifigure’s appearance a little more true to the characters look. However, the helmeted version has only appeared in a couple of sets so far and this new set is the cheapest way to get this particular version of Cap. The torso shows a decent blend of the comic book and movie versions of the character, with a far more colourful version of Captain America’s suit compared the recent Avengers ones. He also features his iconic shield element, which nicely mirrors the larger version the mech has. These oversized suits may not have any basis in other Marvel media, but I can see the appeal for younger fans and AFOLs will certainly be inspired to grab them for the Minifigures alone.
