75397: Jabba’s Sail Barge Minifigures Review

I’m still working on my review of the LEGO® Star Wars UCS Jabba’s Sail Barge set but until then, here’s a closer look at the minifigures featured in the upcoming set. Ultimate Collector Series sets aren’t often known for their mass of minifigures. Occasionally they feature an exclusive character but this UCS set has 11 minifigures. The Minifigures featured in this set are inspired by the scenes in Return of the Jedi, where Jabba’s goons have captured our Rebel heroes and taken them to the Great Pit of Carkoon. Amongst characters aboard the Sail Barge are Crime Lord, Jabba, his henchmen, his majordomo Bib Fortuna, a Gamorrean Guard and his chuckling pet, Salacious Crumb. Plus his ‘guests’ include Theepio, Artoo and Princess Leia. If that wasn’t enough, legendary musician, Max Reebo makes his glorious return.

Minifigures are normally the focus of an Ultimate Collectors Series set unless there is a special character included, causing ‘fans’ to purchase the set and then spend several months moaning about it. So just to be clear, some of the characters featured in this set will be exclusive to it but could be made available in other sets in the future. On the subject of other sets, the first time Jabba’s Sail Barge was portrayed in LEGO form was in 2006, another version was released in 2013. Between them, they featured a mix of characters inspired by scenes from the Return of the Jedi. Just as the set is the ultimate version of the Sail Barge, so too is its line-up of Minifigures

There are 11 characters included in the set, some of them have previously been featured in sets, but have been updated for this one. Jabba the Hutt is a unique character in LEGO form, as he’s a fairly big creature, making him more like a LEGO animal than a minifigure. Similar to the last version of the character, he’s crafted from two pieces, which are connected by a Technic pin. The mould for the character is the same as those used for the character in the 2013 Sail Barge and Jabba’s Palace from 2012, but the print detail has been tweaked and the character has a more muted colour around his face. Similarly, his pet Kowakian monkey-lizard, Salacious Crumb also uses a tweaked version of the original mould, with his ears a slightly different shape and the fur around his shoulders extended around his neck. He also has a vastly improved face print. A comparison image can be found above, those on the left are from set 9516: Jabba’s Palace.

Another returning character is Bib Fortuna, Jabba’s advisor has had his appearance tweaked (or should that be Twi’leked). His unique head which features a lekku, uses the updated element from the Boba Fett’s Throne Room set. In fact, the character is very similar to the version from the 2022 set. He lacks a cape, which didn’t sit well under his lekku and he’s wearing a similar outfit. The Gamorrean Guard also makes a return from the Book of Boba Fett set. this uses a unique section of badu and head which slots over a Minifigure body.

You can’t enforce your grip on a planet’s criminal underworld without some henchmen and his set features three of them. They include Kithaba, Vizam and Wooof. These various humanoid aliens are easily dispatched by Luke and co during their scrape on the Dune Sea. Kithaba is the only character to previously appear in a set. But Vizam and Wooof are making their Minifigure Debuts. I have a soft spot for Wooof as I had him as an action figure as a kid. The Minifigure is great with its new headgear. These may not be exciting characters but they are still great additions to the set.

Beyond the bad guys, the set also features a trio of heroes. After being unexpectedly gifted to Jabba, C-3PO becomes his translator and R2-D2 is sent to work aboard the Sail Barge as a waiter droid. Both Minifigures have appeared in past sets, with the only difference being Artoo’s drinks tray. One surprising inclusion in the set is Princess Leia, whilst the character plays a pivotal role in the film, reports have suggested Disney were keen to steer clear of Slave Leia. After being captured by Jabba, Leia is stripped of her Boushh disguise and made to wear a slightly revealing outfit. There is no mention of the slave term in the set, but the character appears as you’d expect her to look. The character has been improved compared to past versions and now features a new hairpiece. This lays her ponytail over her shoulder allowing a chain to be connected to her back.

Finally, the legendary intergalactic megastar, Max Rebo makes a triumphant return. This rare Star Wars character has only ever appeared in one previous set. His only appearance was in the 2013 version of the Sail Barge. The new version appears to simply reuse the original mould, which to be fair, was a great representation of the character so it didn’t need changing.

Although Minifigures aren’t the focus of a UCS set, this particular one is greatly enhanced by their inclusion. The set would be rather boring without them. I can already see some ‘fans’ complaining that other characters such as Luke, Han, Chewie, Lando and Boba Fett are not being included but they are featured in the recently released Desert Skiff set. Yes, that means an additional cost on top of the already expensive UCS set. But the Minifigures included in the Sail Barge set, offers a nice balance between who is included in the set and a detailed UCS build. Look out for my review of the set soon.
