From the moment the Mandalorian stepped onto the screen it was inevitable his helmet would one day join the LEGO® Star Wars Helmet Collection. The stoic bounty hunter is famed for keeping his face mostly covered as is the way for the Mandalorians. But his introduction to a galaxy far, far away was preceded by Boba Fett’s debut in the Empire Strikes Back. There’s a similarity to all the Mandalorian helmets, which could have easily seen Boba Fett’s Helmet from the first wave of sets simply be recoloured for Din Djarin’s lid. But it’s a completely new design and joins the Dark Trooper and X-wing helmets being released on March 1st. But how does it compare and is it a worthy addition to your LEGO Star Wars collection? Here’s a closer look at The Mandalorian Helmet set.
Product Details
Attention Star Wars: The Mandalorian fans: get into your creative zone and focus on building this collectible LEGO® Star Wars™ replica of The Mandalorian’s helmet (75328). The metallic sheen of beskar armour is cleverly recreated with drum-lacquered elements, while bricks in different shades of grey allow you to highlight the authentic replica’s contours. As mentioned above this isn’t the first time we’ve had a Bounty Hunter’s helmet recreated in LEGO form. Although their helmets have a very similar style, they have subtle differences and of course different colours. But the LEGO Star Wars Design Team haven’t chosen the easy route and just taken Fett’s helmet and switched up the colours. The set features five numbered bags and due to Mando’s helmet being fairly plain, there are no stickers used in this set.
You kick off the build with the core of the helmet. This acts as the surface to add the outer shell of the helmet which is built in section. It largely follows the same style as Fett’s helmet with the visor slat and front dropped plate is very similar but other sections are very different. The cheek plates are much wider and trimmed with shiny silver plates and slopes.
The side panels are also different, Mando doesn’t have a targeting antenna so that’s not features like it is on Fett’s but they are also connected in a different manner. These sections are clipped to the inner core via hinges and thus giving the side panels a wider gate compared to Fett’s. This and the strip of silver elements running across the centre of the helmet makes the set look notably different to Fett’s as well as offering a different build experience.
I expected The Mandalorian’s helmet to be a rather familiar build and rather boring looking set. After all, we’ve already had a Bounty Hunter bucket and it’s probably one of the most iconic. Mando’s doesn’t have a jazzy colour scheme or any fancy gadgets but it’s still an interesting build and a much better than expected display piece. It looks nice alongside Boba Fett’s helmet but I’d love to see The Armourers helmet or other characters more closely connected to Din Djarin’s story. It would also nicely pair with a Mandalorian LEGO Art set if we ever get one.
Review Round-up
It’s nice to see the set is different in terms of appearance and build to Boba Fett’s bucket. The minimal use of shiny pieces actually works better than if it was all clad in lacquered pieces. The slightly sloped side panels also helps to differentiate the set from Fett’s.
For
+ Not just a re-coloured version of Fett’s Helmet
+ Interesting build
+ Great companion piece to Fett’s Helmet
Against
– Front section can be tricky to line up against side plates
