The entire Summer wave of NINJAGO sets is inspired by the upcoming fifteen season titled Crystalized. There’s a single Instructions booklet, as you can see it appears standard LEGO sets will now have a new minimal feel to their instructions. I highly doubt this is a move to remove physical instructions from sets, more a chance to unify standard instructions across themes as well as make special set instructions feel a little more unique. Yes, they look a little plain, the artwork used for the main feature if this review would have been much better. After all you are buying this for the LEGO set not the instructions you will most likely only look at once. There’s also a small single sheet of stickers.

The main focus of the set is a chunky motorbike but it’s joined by Crystal Spider. This simple little build looks quite cool, especially as it incorporates some pink transparent elements, tying it to the newly introduced bad guys.

Motorbikes or similar vehicles have appeared numerous times before In the NINJAGO sets but Jay’s Golden Dragon Motorbike does offer something a little different. It combines the usual blue colouring associated with Jay along with a number of gold pieces. These include a fun golden cladding on the chunky back tyre and a unique new piece used on the ‘bonnet’ of the bike. This is shaped like a dragon head and has the same gold and transparent mix as Jay’s dragon wings.

There are two minifigures featured in this set. These include one of the new Golden Dragon Suits. Every new wave of NINJAGO sets introduces a new set of outfits for the ninja. The Golden Dragon Suits are in addition to those this time around. These elaborate suits use new elements for the wings and the helmet. The wings are unique to each character as they are tinged with their own colouring. So Jay’s Dragon Suit wings have yellow blended with the gold. They connect to the minifigure via a new shoulder piece, this has two Technic pin connectors. The hood is also unique and shaped to appear very dragon-like, this looks great combined with the wings. As cool as these parts are, it’s the minifigure which is more impressive. Almost all the parts of the minifigure use transparent pieces. The result is an amazing looking minifigure.

The other minifigure is a generic bad guy known as a Vengestone Guard. As with all the enemies in this new wave, they are connected to the Crystal King. Parts of it use transparent pieces but not to the same extent as Jay. One of the most exciting parts of this character is the new head element. Oddly, it’s not a helmet which sits over a standard minifigure head, instead, it’s a single piece, which directly connects to the torso. It’s a very cool new piece, I always love elements that combine different materials so the transparent pink-clad with metallic grey results in a unique looking bad guy.

Review Round-up

It feels like it should be a slightly cheaper set, but I guess it does include some unique pieces, not only in the vehicle but also in both of the minifigures. The Golden Dragon version of Jay alone makes the set worthwhile even if on a whole it lacks any exciting play functions.

For

+ Features some great new elements
+ Jay’s Golden Dragon form is very cool
+ Crystal Spider is simple but effective

Against

– Feels like it should have a little lower RRP
