Continuing the early look at the upcoming 2024 LEGO® DREAMZzz sets, the next is inspired by a magical creature from the Dream Realm. The Cat-Owl is a dream mount for Zoey and it’s a creature which can transform into different forms. Allowing the set to be built in a trio of different combinations. The set also features an impressive group of villainous minions of the Nightmare King. Here’s a closer look at the LEGO DREAMZzz set, Zoey and Zian the Cat-Owl.

Although the focus of the set is the mystical Cat-Owl creature, you begin by building a small red bike-like vehicle for Cooper to pilot. There’s room on this to seat one minifigure. This has no physical connection to the rest of the build but offers an additional play function for the set.
As with other LEGO DREAMZzz sets, the main aspect of the build acts as a base for alternate versions to be created. The base for this set is a feline-like creature called Zian. In its base form, this looks just like a mystical cat, it’s not until the extra aspects of the alternate builds are added does it become more owl-like. There are various connection points built into the standard build, which come into play when you choose to turn Zian into a Cat-Owl or a Cat-Peacock.
Using the cat as the base, you can transform Zian into a Cat-Owl, which, as the name suggests is a winged, feline creature. A small section is added to the head, which gives the cat a beak and a more bird-like appearance. The pair of wings are connected to the body. These feature large feather-like green blades, along with the smaller new leaf elements to create large extended wings.
Alternatively, you can choose the second option, which transforms the base model into a Cat-Peacock. This uses the same elements used to create the wings from the Cat-Owl model. So there’s a slightly different crown element connected to the head and the wings become a similar tail plate connected to the rear of the cat.
There are three characters included in the set all of whom have appeared in other sets. Zoey has the most alternate looks but has appeared in at least one other set in this form. The same can be said for Cooper, this version of the character has been featured in two other sets. But the star of the set has to be the Night Hunter. The Night King’s right-hand man certainly fills the brief for looking like a baddie, his unique hat and hand-like scarf are particularly great new elements. One thing I like about the bad guys in the DREAMZzz sets has to be the spooky yellow eyes, they not only look unsettling, they appear on vehicles, weapons and the Grimspawn Army.
Joining the Night Hunter are a ragtag bunch of Grimspawn. These nightmarish creatures appear in various forms and this set does an excellent job of showcasing their variety. One uses the small body piece introduced in the DREAMZzz sets, but uses the oversized minifigure head normally found on the new style Big Figs. The other uses a new creature body and standard minifigure head, along with a recoloured hair piece previously used for the Man-Bat minifigure. The final member of the Grimspawn army is a winged creature, which doubles as a flying platform for the Night Hunter.
The set, in particular, the alternate builds of Zian the Cat-Owl reminds me a great deal of the old LEGO Elves sets. It’s also one of the most fun of the new DREAMZzz sets in terms of the alternate builds. Zoey and Zian the Cat-Owl set will be available from January 1st, 2024 along with the other new LEGO DREAMZzz sets. Stay tuned for a look at the final set in the upcoming wave.
