Since its introduction in 2020, the LEGO® Super Mario theme has offered something unique for fans of both Nintendo and LEGO sets to enjoy. The entire theme is built around an interactive version of Mario. LEGO Mario was soon joined by his brother Luigi and now there’s a new interactive figure on the block in the form of Mushroom Kingdom royalty, Princess Peach. She appears in the third Starter Course set. Continuing the gaming vibes, I’ll be kicking off the LEGO Super Mario Summer set reviews with a look at Adventures with Peach Starter Course and the new LEGO Princess Peach interactive figure.

As is the case with many of the LEGO Super Mario sets, they offer a much different build experience compared to other LEGO sets. They take a leaf out of the Mario games, by offering various little builds which can be connected together to great a physical level. As this is a Starter Course, it includes everything you need to ‘play’ set. That includes a Starter Pipe and the Finish Flag. Along with an interactive figure, these are the most important things you’ll need to be able to create and complete a LEGO version of a Super Mario level.
Along with the start and finish points, the set also includes a number buildable elements, which can be dotted about a ‘level’ between the start and finish. For Peach’s Starter Course, these include a couple of mushroom platforms, a picnic table, a large gift box and the biggest of all those minibuilds is a swing seat. There’s also a number of connector plates to help link all these elements together.
The world of Mario is packed with iconic characters and numerous foes, some of those are included in the set as buildable characters. They include a yellow version of Toad, a Lava Bubble Sprite and another member of the Koopaling, with Lemmy making his LEGO debut.
The star of the set is the third of the interactive figures, this time inspired by Peach. This stylised version of the Princess follows a similar format to both previous figures. So it comprises of a core, in which you place the two AAA batteries, this powers a tiny LCD screen to create animated expressions, and a speaker to allow Peach to chat, play music and sound effects. There’s also a colour sensor to interact with the environment and more importantly the Action Bricks. LEGO Peach is completely compatible with all previous LEGO Super Mario sets and expansion packs. That includes the ability to wear other Power-up Suits and Peach can interact with both Mario and Luigi when they are both connected via the app. Unfortunately, only two figures can be connected to the app at the same time.
The Action Bricks are not technically printed elements, but unique stickers, which are pre-applied. These are on characters, items and other surfaces. When LEGO Peach scans them they activate various things. For example, place LEGO Peach on the swing and move it to activate unique sound effects and gain coins. The latest wave of sets are introduce fruit, when scanned they are ‘eaten’ and provide bonus coins.
Finally, the biggest difference with these sets is how they are built. The box doesn’t contain any physical instructions. Instead, you use the dedicated LEGO Super Mario app, which offers digital step-by-step instructions to create the set as well as keeping track of your set collection and game progress as well as connecting to the interactive figures. If you prefer a similar experience to the paper instructions, you can access PDF versions via the LEGO Instructions App or from LEGO.com.
