60397: Monster Truck Race LEGO City Set Review

Of the three LEGO® 2KDRIVE sets being released next month, the Monster Truck Race set has to be the whackiest. In the game, there is a wide range of vehicles to drive around in. These include everything from cars found in real LEGO sets to more whimsical creations. It’s entirely possible to race in a hamburger, coffee cup or a house which is actually a boat. This set continues with the game’s unusual transportation offerings with two themed monster trucks. In this new LEGO set review, I’ll be taking a look at the most colourful of the three LEGO 2KDRIVE sets – Monster Truck Race.

Although you can build either vehicle, thanks to the numbered bags appearing on the instructions, the build officially begins with the Taco Monster Truck. The mix of red and green elements ties it nicely to Mexican theming. As does the vehicle’s weapons system, which is a bolt-blasting taco. This is mounted on a turntable so can spin around. The front section looks a little like a monstrous creature but also feels slightly unfinished due to the exposed hollowed studs. I assume they are left this way to make them seem like eyes.

Both vehicles have a similar base build but it’s the body of each where they obviously differ. The purple, gold and white colouring wouldn’t normally be associated with pirates but blends well. The vehicle uses its buildable details to tie it more to the pirate theming. So on the back of the Monster Truck, there’s a small sail, flag and an oddly mounted treasure chest. In place of a bolt-blasting weapon system, the Pirate Ship Monster Truck features a pair of stud shooters and the treasure chest is filled with fish.

The stars of the set are the vehicles but you still need someone to drive them. The Taco Monster Truck is driven by a Luchador-style wrestler, it has a great print detail on the head and torso. The Pirate Ship Truck belongs to the Pirate Diver, she has an interesting torso featuring a shark design. This character also reuses the tri-corn hat with a ponytail element. Both characters look fun and match the theme of their vehicles.

Overall

Both sets look fun and lean into their theming really well. I like the blend of colours on the Taco Monster Truck but prefer the detailing on the Pirate Ship Monster Truck. They both feel inspired by similar designs found in the LEGO-themed racer but also LEGO City sets in general. It will be interesting to see how they are implemented in the game. Although the packaging states they can be played in LEGO 2KDRIVE, both vehicles aren’t currently found in the game. The set doesn’t feature any sort of code to unlock them, so I assume they will be a part of future Driver Pass content or added to the in-game shop. Until then you can relive the races in real life with these two fun-filled sets.
