Between the constant fires and seemingly endless crime spree, the folks of LEGO® City have found time to enjoy some new pastimes. This has resulted in some interesting new sets for the long-running theme. The first wave of LEGO City sets arriving in 2023 will include plenty of firsts such as the set I’m taking a look at in the review. The world of gaming has become a great source of inspiration for LEGO sets and now that includes competitive gaming with the Gaming Tournament Truck. So here’s a closer look at set 60388.

Gaming Roadshows aren’t really a thing in the UK but the notion behind the set is still familiar. Large articulated trucks are often used at events and hide a wealth treats within them. What is prevalent is the rise of steamers and competitive eSports. Those are combined to be the focus of this unique new LEGO City set.
The truck is built upon an interesting element I’ve not seen before, I couldn’t say for sure if it’s been used in other sets or if it’s a new piece. But it’s a pretty large element which is 6 studs wide and features a shorter platform at one end then a drop and a lower longer plate. It’s the perfect shape and length to form the base of the truck’s trailer. Two of these elements are used to create the trailer, which opens up to reveal a large ‘screen’. On the screen is a ‘working’ game, with 2 characters mounted on a rail so they can be moved. Behind the screen, you can access the plates which slide the characters from side to side, there’s also a health counter which can be moved. It’s a simple function but is quite fun and adds nicely to the spectacle of the trailer.
A game obviously needs someone to play it and there are 2 rather colourful gamers included in the set. It’s clear they are inspired by the likes of Ninja, Mr Beast and Pokimane. Their colourful outfits and matching hairstyles reflect their in-game avatars. The pink-haired gamer plays as horned, flamed-fisted character and the blue-haired gamer inhabits a hooded, sword user. These characters are featured on those moving plates and on the inside of the large flip-up side panel of the truck.
Both gamers have their own gaming deck, which is connected to the inside of the truck’s trailer. They are on click hinges so can be swung out or folded away. The large inner section of the truck isn’t the only feature of the trailer. At the back is a merch store, where 2 sections of the trailer open to reveal minifigure accessories inspired by the 2 gamers and their avatars, such as a blue sword and a pair of pink fist elements. At the opposite end is a transparent green sloped canopy, which is covering a small gaming trophy.
Those large plates used to create the base of the trailer aren’t the only interesting elements used to create the set. The large side panels of the trailer are the same pieces used as the covers for the Harry Potter Hogwarts Moments sets. They are simply decorated with various angled plates such as NEXO shields. I really like the abstract patterns these create and it continues on the detachable cab of the truck. One feature I’m not 100% sure I like is the oversized controller on the roof of the trailer. It looks fun but I think it needed fixing in place a little differently, as it is, this simply spins around and just feels misplaced.
LEGO City sets have started to feature some great minifigures, but it’s very rare that every single minifigure is a set is great. That’s definitely the case with the.Gamijg Tournament Truck as all 4 of the minifigures are pretty amazing. The 2 gamers have torsos featuring designs inspired by their game characters. The fan has a torso which has been used before but is suitably gaming related but the best of the bunch is the host. I love his torso, the same design is featured on the outside of the truck. In fact, I love it so much it will become by new SigFig outfit.
Overall
I love this set, it not only offers something unique for the LEGO City range but it’s just a fun set all round. Fun to build and fun to play with. It looks great and includes some great functional elements. Even though it features a few stickers, they just add to the appeal of the set. As mentioned it’s very rare that a set contains so many great minfigures, but they are all really good and introduce a trio of new torsos. Fire and police have their place in LEGO City but its sets like the Gaming Tournament Truck which show the theme has so much more to offer.
