Starting today, I’ll be taking a look at the complete wave of LEGO® City sets being released on June 1st in most regions. To kick things off, I’ve chosen the smallest of the new sets, but one which features two brand new animal figures. The LEGO City theme has had a bit of a resurgence in the last couple of years. This began with the introduction of named characters from the LEGO City Adventures TV show and although that’s now been abandoned, the sets remain full of great minifigures, totally new concepts as well as fresh takes of past releases. What’s most impressive is there isn’t a single police car or a fire engine in sight! So here’s a closer look at the Seal Battle Pack aka Arctic Explorer Snowmobile.

The last time the brave minifigure residents of LEGO City took to exploring the Arctic wilds was back in 2018 and then previous to that in 2014. Both waves featured a similar selection of sets and these new Arctic Explorer sets do have a connection to those past ones, in that they feature the same orange and dark blue colour scheme. But this time around the selection of sets quite varied. This may be a small set, but it’s well worth its price tag.
The set includes two buildable elements – a snowmobile and an icy plate. Now normally these small sets are just there to make up the numbers and the attraction for many will be the new seal elements. But I have to say the snowmobile is a great little build. I like the use of the Technic harp-shaped elements for the rear tracks of the vehicle. I also like the manner in which the film camera is built. Normally these use the camera body element as a base, this one is different and uses a few unusual parts such as a phone receiver, pot and minifigure display peg. The icy platform is quite simple but makes a nice resting place for the set’s starring feature.
As mentioned in the intro, the LEGO City sets have really stepped up things recently and although they have lost the named characters, the minifigures are offering something different than usual. There’s one minifigure featured in the set and they can wear either a safety helmet or the beanie with hair, first used in the Hidden Side sets. The Explorer is also sporting a new version of the ‘knapsnack’ element which is now dual-coloured.
It’s become very apparent that LEGO fans love LEGO animals and this set introduces not one but new brand new ones. So you’ll be able to add a grey adult seal and a smaller white seal cub to your collection. Given the set’s small price tag, I’d expect this to be a popular set purely for those two seals figures. As a reminder, although these may appear in future pick-a-brick offerings, their pricing per element could outstrip the price of the actual set.
