There have been numerous LEGO tractors over the years, most notably from the 2009 farm-focused sub-theme of LEGO City. Even so, it’s been a while since we’ve had an agricultural focused tractor. With each new wave of LEGO City sets, particularly those released at the start of the year, we get a selection of vehicular sets known as Great Vehicles. One of this year’s additions is a tractor. What’s interesting about this set is the use of a couple of new elements. But a set is far more than just a few new pieces, so here’s another 2021 set review, as I take a look at the new LEGO City Tractor.

The Build
Along with the Tractor, the set also features a crate of fruit and vegetables, along with two small bales of hay. These two seemingly insignificant parts of the build are actually quite interesting due to the fact they use a pair of new elements. Which are rather odd, but could prove useful. They are best described as a 2×2 plate, which is two plates high, which is usual for an element. That’s not all, the centre of the element features a Technic axle slot and the sides of the element feature horizontal grooves. I’d be interested to see how this is used in other sets. The same element is also used on the Tractor but in black. There is also a different variant of a 1×2 Technic brick, which has a 1×2 plate connected to it
The actual Tractor build is nice, sturdy and fairly chunky, which is what you’d expect a piece of heavy-duty farm machinery to be. The cab section is particularly nice, with a couple of squared windscreen elements stacked to create the higher seating position of the driver. There is a slight issue with how low the steering wheel is but it’s a minor issue. The driver will just have to stretch a little. I also love the tyres, especially the big chunky back ones. They really help to capture the overall appearance of a tractor.
The tipper bucket is also nicely achieved with a pair of Technic element-built arms connected to a bucket element. This is something which not every Tractor has, but it could be easily tweaked and removed should you wish to do so. There is also a connection point on the rear of the Tractor, upon which a trailer could be fitted with a ball plate.
The Minifigures
There are two Minifigures in the set, a fairly trendy looking farmer and his young daughter. Neither of them is unique or feature new elements but they both fit nicely with the Tractor. However, you do get a rabbit, which isn’t featured in many sets so if you’re been keen to add one to you LEGO menagerie, this is a great set to do so.
Overall
The Great Vehicles range has provided an impressive selection of vehicles, often a welcome change to the endless Police and Fire based sets. In fact, if nothing else this set only increases the desire for a farm sub-theme. There are many more things to do around LEGO City apart from trying to get into space, underwater exploration or the occasional mining trip. But as we long for a more varied approach to some aspects of future City sub-themes, the Tractor is a fun little set. The Minifigures could have been a little more adventurous but the focus is, of course, the Tractor and as small sets go this is one of the better ones.
