42102: LEGO Technic Mini CLAAS XERION Set Review

Back in 2016, LEGO® partnered with German agricultural machinery manufacturer CLAAS to recreate their XERION tractor as a Power Function LEGO Technic fuelled set. Although that set has long been retired, it has inspired another LEGO Technic set. However this one is a little on the smaller side. The CLAAS tractor is known for their unique green livery, tinged with streaks of red and white. All of these have been capture in the smaller version. I’ve managed to find a few of the new LEGO sets in stores already so read on for another new LEGO set review.

The Build

I rather enjoy building Technic sets, their different approach to building compared to System sets are fun to see. Especially seeing how the functional abilities are incorporated into the build at various points. Although I’ve built many of the larger Technic sets, I’ve not really paid much attention to the smaller ones. When I saw this mini CLAAS XERION, I thought it looked quite nice and I wanted the larger set, but never picked it up.

It may be a little on the small size, but this mini CLAAS still manages to incorporate a simple gear system and manual powered elements. By manual I mean good old fashioned push power. So the rear wheel axle is connected to a various gear wheels, which turn a pair of larger gears. This represent crop cutting blades. But that’s not all there is also an extremely simple mechanism, which allows you to lift the blades.

Overall

The Mini CLAAS XERION tractor may not have the powered elements or size of its bigger brother, but it’s still a cool looking little set. I love it when larger LEGO sets are recreated as smaller scale sets. Trying to capture the look and functions of larger sets on a smaller scale, isn’t easy, but this does a decent enough job. By looking at the set, you can instantly tell it’s a CLAAS tractor, and the functional elements match those of the larger set. As with many Technic sets, there is also a B-model, this looks similar to the B-model of the larger set, which is a nice touch. If like me you missed out on the original CLAAS Technic set, this is a fun alternative, at a fraction of the price.
