40693: The Lord of the Rings: Fell Beast Review

I’ll begin by noting this set is no longer available. It was given away with purchases of the newly released set inspired by The Lord of the Rings: Barad-Dûr set. Unfortunately, by the time the set arrived to review, it had already sold out. But here’s a look at it anyway, which is inspired by the fearsome beasts used by Sauron’s Ringwraiths.

As mentioned, the Fell Beast set was given away as a bonus item when you purchased the Barad-Dûr set. I must of proves popular, as it systematically a sold out in various regions just days after the set became through Insiders early access. The Fell Beast is a large winged. reptilian, bird-like creature used as steeds by the Nazgûl. They feature heavily in the Return of the King where they are used to attack Minas Tirith.

In LEGO form, the set features the winged beast, a Nazgûl minifigure and part of a wall battlement. A lot has been said about the Fell Beast’s appearance and I partly agree with some of the complaints. The Fell Beast appears to be a dark skinned beast in the film. Here it features a mix of dark grey and tan pieces. The wings are unique plastic film pieces, which slot over the small ball connectors mounted on a Technic beam frame. But the set is let down by the head. Obviously, this isn’t a highly detailed set, but the lack of eyes makes it a little too basic. Whether it be a sticker or print, the creature needed eyes.

The Nazgûl minifigure is unique, in terms of the currently available set inspired by The Lord of the Rings. Of the elements used to create it, only the torso is unique. Compared to the past versions of the character, the newer open-fronted cloak hood element is an improvement over the classic hood previously used.

The small section of wall may not seem like much, but it’s certainly needed as the Fell Beast is a little tricky to stand due to it’s large wing span, long tail and neck. The Fell Beast can perch on the wall making it much easier to display.

If you were lucky enough to get one free when purchasing the latest Lord of the Rings set, it’s a nice bonus to have especially considering the high price tag of Barad-Dûr. Yes it could have been slightly better detailed but I think the biggest criticism but go to the sets availability. I know LEGO Lord of the Rings sets are very popular and I’m sure Barad-Dûr has sold very well but it’s obvious that there wasn’t enough stock of this GWP produced. It’s certainly not sure paying excessive amounts for on the secondary market. This set may no longer be available, but the Barad-Dûr set is available now.
