40579: Eiffel’s Apartment LEGO GWP Review

As I continue to construct the LEGO® ICONS Eiffel Tower, here’s a look at the exclusive GWP set which will come with all purchases of the tallest LEGO set ever. Officially revealed earlier this week, the Eiffel Tower stands at almost 1.5 metres in height and contains an impressive 10001 pieces. Thankfully as an added bonus, if the set is purchased during the Black Friday event, you’ll get the Eiffel’s Apartment promotional set for free. So ahead of my review of the Eiffel Tower, here’s a look at its accompanying GWP set, Eiffel’s Apartment.

As you will find out when building the LEGO ICONS Eiffel Tower set, its designer Gustave Eiffel, built an apartment right at the top of the tower. With unparalleled views of Paris, this special room is at the top of the tower. Sitting just below the tip of the tower’s spire, the bourgeois-style apartment was simply decorated with velvet cushioned chairs, wooden tables and cabinets, and colourful patterned wallpaper. Despite the décor, Eiffel didn’t live in the apartment, instead using it to conduct experiments. It remains there today and stands as a moment in time as it would have looked in Gustave’s time.

The LEGO version of Eiffel’s Apartment doesn’t completely recreate the room, instead, it captures part of the interior and exterior. The configuration of the section of the room corresponds to a corner of the tower. There’s even a strut of the tower running inside the interior of the room. One of the most eye-catching features of the interior is the colourful patterned wallpaper. These are stickers, which are applied to various bricks making up the wall. Other details in the room include a wooden desk, side table, chair and a miniature recreation of the Eiffel Tower.

The exterior is less detailed but is to be expected with it representing the dark grey iron beams of the Eiffel Tower. The exterior of the section around the platform doubles up as a viewing platform. There is a simple set of safety railings and a pair of viewing scopes.

Finally, the set includes a minifigure version of the Eiffel Tower’s designer, Gustave Eiffel. It seems like a nice likeness compared to some of the photos of the late engineer. With the same head used for Old Ben Kenobi almost matching that of Eiffel. Although the bowtie seems at odds with the more unique version he wears in most pictures.

It’s a fun set and a nice companion piece for those purchasing the Eiffel Tower. Obviously, the spend threshold to qualify for the set is directly linked to the price of the Eiffel Tower. But if you’re spending over £500/$600/600€ on a set you’d expect to get some sort of bonus and this is it. If you purchase the Eiffel Tower, you’ll get this GWP set along with the Tribute To LEGO House and Elves Winter Scene GWPs for free as well. I’m still building the Eiffel Tower set and my review will be live once it’s complete.
