Over the past few weeks, Matthew Ashton, VP of Design at the LEGO Group, has been teasing a new set which he has designed. He’s been sharing images of LEGO® elements on social media and we now know exactly what he’s been up to. That set is the recently revealed Everyone Is Awesome. The set has been created to celebrate Pride Month and those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Before getting to the review, I know this set will have a greater impact beyond being just a new set with some cool Minifigures. It represents something far more important to so many people than a bunch of bricks being connected together. So here’s my review of the colourful new Everyone is Awesome set.

The inspiration for the set is the rainbow, a symbol closely associated with Pride and also a great expression of the colourful palette of LEGO bricks. The actual build is rather simple and features a cascade of colourful stripes to create an L shape display plate. Despite the simpleness of the display area, it’s extremely impactful and the perfect platform for a gang of colourful monochrome Minifigures.
These single colour characters are highly collectible. Within the AFOL community, there are those who sought to collect single colour Minifigures. But the task isn’t easy, as not all elements are available in every colour. The Minifigures available in this set really push that, especially as they also include hair elements. Most of these are not available in the colours featured here. One is also brand new, the bright blue Minifigure is sporting a new quiff hairstyle I’ve not seen in a set before. I could be wrong but this hairpiece looks a lot like Matthew’s, maybe he’s the inspiration for it.
The Minifigures are placed in each of their relevant lanes of colour on a 1×2 plate and they are staggered. Each stands one stud back from the other, which results in a great visual against the background. The rest of the elements used for the coloured stripes are all SNOT, which really helps to offer a vibrant splash of colour.
The LEGO Group has a long history of supporting and caring for its fan community, no matter who they are. I know there will be some small-minded folks out there who will push against this set for what it celebrates. As the title of the set notes – everyone is awesome and anyone can add this set to their collection. It may mark a special moment in your or someone else’s life, but if you are simply looking at this as a great new LEGO set, you’re getting 11 monochrome Minifigures for a surprisingly decent price.
The Everyone is Awesome set will be available from LEGO Stores and LEGO.com from June 1st, just in time for Pride Month and it retails at £34.99/$34.99/34.99€.
