The latest LEGO® House exclusive set was revealed earlier this week and the team at the Billund attraction have kindly sent a copy of the set to take a closer look at. This is the fifth set in a series of Limited Edition builds which began with the Wooden Duck in 2021. Unlike other LEGO House exclusives, which have been inspired by areas in the attraction, the Limited Edition series seeks inspiration from LEGO history. The latest charts the foundations of LEGO play and the three main play systems – LEGO System, DUPLO and Technic. Between them, these three systems use different bricks and are aimed at capturing different age ranges but are connected by the ability to inspire creativity. So here’s a hands-on look at the LEGO House Limited Edition 5 – LEGO Building Systems.

The five different LEGO House Limited Edition sets, share a similar style of base. This offers uniform connectivity with each set, which otherwise has nothing to do with each other beyond being inspired by moments in LEGO history. It also includes two printed tiles, featuring the sets name and the LEGO House title.
The LEGO Building Systems set is split into three sections, each focused on a different LEGO build system. For those unaware, the whole concept of LEGO sets is inspired by the urge to introduce some sort of uniformity within the toy industry. This is how the LEGO System of Play was conceived. One of the early sets to make use of the LEGO System was set 810: Town Plan. This mixed LEGO bricks with diecast trees and vehicles. It’s that set which has inspired the central section of the set. This replicates the town scene as a microscale build. With a limited array of bricks available during the time the Town Plan set was released, it has a unique style. Something which has been captured with this set.
On either side of the LEGO System Town Plan section are smaller builds inspired by DUPLO and Technic. The DUPLO system was introduced in the 70s with the idea of creating simple sets with bigger bricks for younger kids. Since DUPLO was introduced trains have features in many different sets. Originally, this section of the set featured a brightly coloured recreation reminiscent of the Alphabet Train, before it was revised to take inspiration from both sets 2700 and 2705. This changes to the mini-build to a simpler train, using just red, yellow and blue elements.
The opposite side is focused on LEGO Technic. The more advanced build system has changed a lot since it was introduced in the 70s. Although the sets have always offered more complex builds, the early sets look very different to what the theme provides today. So similar to the Town Plan and the DUPLO Train, the Technic section is also inspired by an earlier set. Originally this was going to be a tractor, but was later changed to become a mini version of set 853: Car Chassis. As the entire set is built from system bricks, to capture the style of early Technic elements the build is flipped to show the underside of the LEGO elements.
The back of the set may seem a little random, but the jagged grey wall has been included to replicate the design of the walls in the LEGO House History Collection, which also features golden blocks to highlight key moments and special information. The back wall of the set also features recreations of the three bricks used in each of the build systems. But it also serves another purpose, which can be found on the back wall.
Flipping the set around reveals a collection of microscale recreations of the various LEGO sets. Just as the History Collection showcases LEGO sets from over the years, this part of the build does the same. There are miniature versions of many different sets such as the Wooden Duck, Yellow Castle, Pirate Ship, Ideas Tree House, Friends House, Space Shuttle, Space Rover and even a Bionicle canister. There’s also a space left for you to add a mini-build of your own.
Although it may not seem as exciting as some of the previous LEGO House sets, it is an interesting set to build. Especially seeing how the different build systems are recreated with LEGO bricks. Without any signposting, you can tell what each of the three sections represents. The 19 microscale builds on the back of the set are a fun touch, even if some of them are a little difficult to place.
