For the next few weeks, you can get a free LEGO® Hot Rod set with various spend amounts. The Blue Fury Hot Rod is a based on an older and much larger LEGO set released back in the 90s. This mini version includes two Minifigures and is currently free when you spend £85/$85/85€ or more on any LEGO products. But is it worth shelling out all that money to get or should it remain in the garage? Here’s a closer look at the LEGO Hot Rod GWP set.

The Build
The Hot Rod is rather unique looking vehicle and the highlight the pinnacle of customization in early years of American automotive history. Although there are many different styles of hot rods, one of the key consistent elements they all feature is an exposed engine. In the world of brick-built vehicles, there haven’t really been that many Minifigure-scale hot rods. Apart from a couple of LEGO City sets and bygone adventure era sets, the hot rod hasn’t been that prevalent in LEGO sets. Which makes this GWP rather desirable.
As mentioned above the set takes its inspiration from a classic Model Team set first released in 1995. This was a much larger-scale set but when you compare it to this set, you can see the similarities. The build is similar to most other LEGO vehicles of the same sort of size. I like the way the exposed engine is achieved with a range of light grey elements, instead of just whacking a couple of engine in-take elements on the bonnet. Surprisingly the stickers, which features the engine caps, actually look really good. I also like the flat tiles which surround the driver’s seat.
The set also includes two Minifigures a female mechanic and a male driver. Both are made up of fairly common pieces, with the Newbury High branded torso on the man, being featured in the fewest sets. Both characters fit nicely with the vehicle, although I’m not a fan of the mirrored sunglasses look.
Overall
In the last few years, LEGO has stepped up its GWP output. This is a decent little freebie, especially since there aren’t that many LEGO hot rod vehicles around. It’s the perfect match for the LEGO Creator Expert Corner Garage modular and would certainly look great cruising the streets of LEGO City. The spend limit is a little high in my opinion, but this seems to be the new normal for LEGO GWP sets of this sort. You have until June 21st or while stocks last, to get one free with spends of £85/$85/85€.
