10791: Team Spidey’s Mobile Headquarters Review

The LEGO® product range caters for a wide age range and sitting between DUPLO and standard LEGO sets is the 4+ range. Once known as LEGO Juniors, 4+ sets now reside in various themes offering simple-to-build models aimed at younger builders. But don’t be fooled by the suggested age, what these sets lack in complex building techniques they more than makeup for with unique elements, printed pieces and fun minifigures. One such set is the recently released Team Spidey’s Mobile Headquarters. This extremely unique set is inspired by the animated adventures of Spider-Man and his various spider-themed chums. Here’s a look at set 10791: Team Spidey’s Mobile Headquarters.

As with previous 4+ set reviews, there is little point going into the build process in great detail. The nature of the sets means they have been designed to provide an easy-to-build experience. Instructions are set out slightly differently from other LEGO sets, with pages focusing on adding just a couple of elements at a time and clearly highlighting the elements needed. Another aspect of the 4+ sets is the unique ‘starter bricks’ elements and printed pieces.

There are three main buildable elements of this set, they include a pair of mini vehicles, a shop with some additional scenery and the excellently unique Mobile Headquarters. As the set is designed to be easy enough for younger builders to tackle by themselves, none of these pieces is massively detailed or complex, but they still offer something fun to play with. The shop is very small, featuring a door and section of wall, with a small part of the interior. It has a couple of interesting printed pieces such as the signage and a box of cereal. The other buildable scenery includes an egg-firing weapon, which is basically a small wall of bricks, with a projector brick built into it.

The smaller vehicles are each tied to the hero characters. One is a Black Panther-themed buggy and the other is a spider-themed race car. Both are similar builds to what you’d find in some of the LEGO Magazines sets. There are also small enough, to fit in the back of the van HQ. Both are simple to build and can easily be identified as to which characters they are connected to. This is also the case with web-themed weapons, which are featured in red and pink colours.

Finally, the highlight of this set and in fact all the Spidey sets is the van-like Mobile Headquarters. Not only does this use most of the unique elements found in the set, but it also looks great. Those unique elements help to give the van an unusual appearance and shape. Almost every element used to craft the van is either unique or rare. The most generic of these are the 8x10x2 chassis ‘starter bricks’, these have various connection points which could be useful elsewhere. Obviously, the large curved cockpit is new but the printing on it, would limit its use in other builds, the wall plates have a similar issue. Some of the other larger red elements are not really unique but haven’t appeared in many other sets, making them quite rare.

There are five minifigures included in the set and they are inspired by the versions of the characters from the animated Spidey and his Amazing Friends series. As this is aimed towards younger viewers, the character is also a little younger than some of their other variants. This version of Spidey is unique to the 2023 sets with both Miles Morales and Black Panther unique to this particular set. Ghost-Spider features a mix of previously used parts to create the character, but a unique torso. Rhino has also appeared in one other set and makes great use of a unique head armour element. If you are only interested in the Marvel sets for their minifigures, then this is a great set to boost your character ranks.

Overall

Yes, it’s simple to build and rightly so it’s aimed at young LEGO fans, but it’s a really interesting set. The unique elements alone are quite special and I will continue to marvel at the fact pieces are printed instead of using stickers. Although the set includes a few different buildable elements, the star of the show is most definitely the van-like Mobile Headquarters. This also happens to feature most of the unique elements. Another draw of the set is the minifigures. The characters have appeared in other sets and in other forms but most of them are unique to this set or at least fairly rare. All in all, this is quite an appealing set for the intended age group and beyond, thanks to its uniqueness.
