40896: The X-Files: Scully’s Lab GWP Review

In recent years, some of the showpiece LEGO® Ideas sets have been accompanied by an exclusive bonus GWP set. The Italian Riviera gave us a Flower Market Van; The Goonies came with a set inspired by Mikey’s Attic, and a ticket office was available alongside the River Steamboat. That tradition is set to continue with the upcoming released on the LEGO Ideas set inspired by The X-Files. Purchasing the latest LEGO Ideas sets before August 10th will bag you a bonus mini set inspired by Dana Scully’s medical laboratory. But is the promotional set worth purchasing The X-Files set upon release? Here’s a look at set 40896: Scully’s Lab.

FBI Agent Dana Scully was introduced in the first episode of The X-Files. As a doctor with a background in science, Scully was placed in the X-Files unit to monitor and debunk Fox Mulder’s work using her scientific expertise. To explain the unexplained, so to speak. But the longer she worked with Fox Mulder, her scepticism soon changed, although she was never as far down the rabbit hole as Mulder. Her medical expertise often saw her performing examinations on various victims, monsters and mutants. Technically, Scully doesn’t have her own bespoke lab, but is often seen working in one, should a case require it. This has inspired this bonus promotional set.

Similar to Mulder’s Office in the larger set, the lab includes some interesting techniques to create some of the lab’s furnishings. The walls feature various cabinets and shelves filled with bottles and beakers. The rest of the space is filled with the usual medical equipment you would expect to find in a forensic pathology facility. These include a steel table, specimen table, microscope and lamp. These can be moved around the lab and placed in different spots thanks to the various jumper plates dotted around the floor. It does lack some tools and someone or something to examine, but maybe that would be a little macabre.

It wouldn’t be Scully’s Lab without Scully, who is included in the set. This is a second version of the character and differs from the version found in the larger set. Here she is featured in a medical outfit, which includes a white coat torso. The head is unique, as it features goggles on one of the minifigures’ two expressions. It also uses the same new hairpiece introduced for the Dana minifigure. But why Dana has a list (printed on a 1×2 tile) instead of a voice recorder is odd.

If you are tempted to purchase the main set, I would certainly recommend doing so before August 1oth as this GWP set is a worthy companion piece. It’s a nice bonus, but beyond the exclusive parts of the Dana minifigure, you could source the bricks yourself and recreate it. It’s a shame the GWP wasn’t inspired by something a little more unique, maybe the Lone Gunman’s office or an alien crypt. Scully’s Lab is only available when you purchase The X-Files LEGO Ideas set between August 1st and 10th, with Insiders Early Access between August 1st and 3rd.
