Before we return to the MCU and herald the arrival of Dr Doom, we head to New York to reunite with its one and only, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Peter Parker is still dealing with the spell Doctor Strange cast to help hide his identity, but that leaves him isolated from those he used to call friends. But Peter, no longer being known by those close to him, doesn’t stop various street-level villains from doing what they do – causing trouble. The Prison Transport is the smallest of the two play sets inspired by Spider-Man: Brand New Day and includes another bad guy for Spidey’s growing roster of MCU foes. Here’s a look at the Spider-Man Prison Transport Chase set.

If you’ve watched the trailer for Brand New Day, you’ll notice an armour-plated vehicle appears in the chase sequence, which also features the Punisher. That vehicle has a military camo paint job, but looks similar in style to the one found in this set. So I’m not entirely sure if they are meant to be the same vehicle. The set gives the transporter a DODC livery, with several stickers used to add detail, including ‘TSA-134’, which isn’t a random call sign; it just so happens to be the issue number of The Amazing Spider-Man comic in which Tarantula debuts.
The transporter has an opening hatch on the roof, giving access to the vehicle’s interior and weapon accessories. You can also open a section on the rear of the vehicle to transport a villainous minifigure. Stud shooters are also found on the roof of the transporter, but the best feature is the wheels. The rear pair of tyres is mounted on a Technic beam, which is then fixed to the body of the vehicle with one Technic pin. This gives it enough movement to trundle over small obstacles with ease.
The set features four minifigures, including Spider-Man, Tarantula, Tombstone and a Department of Damage Control agent. Spidey also appears in the larger Hulk Epic Clash set, with the minifigure reflecting Peter Parker’s more traditional outfit. The DODC agent has Jurassic World ranger vibes. Apart from a couple of DODC logos, this is a pretty nondescript minifigure. But her inclusion acts as a play factor of the set.
Tarantula also makes his second appearance, also appearing in the larger set. Apart from the spike elements held in the hands and connected to the feet, the Tarantula isn’t a very exciting-looking character. Tombstone is another character to make his MCU debut, although he has appeared in the alternate universe Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man animated series. The character is often shown with pale skin, which is paired with white hair and a rather dapper-looking waistcoat and shirt. It’s a great minifigure, and it will be interesting to see how it compares to the character in the film
Despite doubling up on two characters from the larger Spider-Man: Brand New Day set and having a rather plain DODC agent, Tombstone is a great minifigure. The Prison Truck is also nice and hefty, perfect for continuing Spidey’s adventures after seeing the film. But best of all, the set doesn’t suffer the same fate as some similar MCU sets and hasn’t been given a stupendous price. The set will be available from June 1st, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits cinemas the following month.
