Both the Star Wars and Marvel character busts offer a choice of build configurations. This isn’t as drastic as other sets, which offer alternative builds. Instead, it’s purely focused on the set’s base. This can be built to display just the printed display plaque or the plaque along with space for the set’s included minifigure. The Yoda minifigure has only appeared in one other set, Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter from 2023. Similar to the Vader minifigure from Vader Bust, this is just a basic take on the character, but a little rarer compared to Vader.
The bust is inspired by Yoda’s prequel era appearance and, unlike Vader’s bust, includes more of the Jedi Master’s body and a Lightsaber. Much of the body is focused on Yoda’s arm. These have been combined with the body section in a clever way. They blend nicely and also converge to provide the necessary stance when welding a Lightsaber. Probably the most interesting part of the set is Yoda’s head. Yes, it does look a little odd, in particular, the ears showing the underside of the LEGO elements used to build them. The eyes have also been the subject of much discussion. They are pins which include print detail on the ball end of them. The thing which can make them look rather odd and even evil is how they are placed. There are two studs within the sockets of the eyes, but it’s not clear if the eye pins should rest against them or be pushed further into the head. Either way that are awkward to mount and take a while to get them sitting neatly without making Yoda look drunk, confused or with an evil expression.
Thanks to the many different sets which have recreated a wide host of Star Wars characters, some fare better than others when being replicated with LEGO bricks. Non-human characters often look better, as do many of the characters who wear armour. So Yoda was always going to be tricky to get right. I will say that the set looks better in person. When it was first revealed, many commented on Yoda’s soul-piercing eyes. Yes, they are, let’s say, unique, but they are only a tiny part of the set. Of the Star Wars Busts, Vader is the better of the two, but the Yoda one also has its charm. The LEGO Star Wars Bust Collection sets are available now.
