Considering Grogu, aka The Child, is a fairly recent addition to the Star Wars universe, he’s appeared in various buildable LEGO® forms a surprising number of times. Of those sets, the latest is similar to the 2020 version, back when Grogu was simply known as The Child, except this time, he’s kitted out in his Mandalorian gear. But does Grogu warrant another set? Here’s a look at the Grogu Mandalorian Apprentice buildable figure.

The inner core of Grogu is a sort of tower frame. This acts as the canvas to attach the exterior plates, which become Grogu’s robes. It’s also used to house a simple mechanism that moves Grogu’s head. There’s a small handle at the base of Grogu’s back. Moving this from side-to-side mirrors the same movement to Grogu’s head.
Although most points of Grogu are fixed, you can pose parts of his head in different ways. The mouth can be opened, and the ears can be angled upwards or pointing slightly down. Thankfully, the connection point for the ears has been improved over the 2020 version. Hopefully, these joints shouldn’t become weak, and the ears will still be poseable in years to come. These small movable pieces are enough to add a little personality to Grogu.
After making his choice to return to Din Djarin’s side, Grogu learns the way of the Mandalorians. This includes wearing a rondel of Beskar armour. Here this is attached to the strap of a satchel. This is built separately from Grogu and is placed around him. It can be a little difficult to get it to seat neatly, but a little adjustment will line up the armour plate on Grogu’s front, with the satchel lying on his side. The Beskar rondel is a large disc piece, which features the printed Mudhorn design, bestowed upon Din and his creed. Unfortunately, the disc is packed with other elements, so the one in the set I built had a few scratches on it. The satchel may only be tiny, but it hides a gap big enough to store one of Grogu’s favourite blue space cookies.
Grogu’s right arm can be posed in different ways depending on how you connect it. This also includes Grogu’s second piece of Mandalorian equipment, an arm-mounted weapon. This is purely cosmetic. I’m surprised it doesn’t include any stud-shooters.
Like many of the larger buildable Star Wars characters, Grogu is accompanied by a UCS-style display plate. This printed plaque details some facts about Grogu, I say facts, as there really isn’t much known about Grogu’s past or his species. The stand also includes space to display the new style Grogu figure. This uses the newly introduced version of Grogu, which has an improved body piece. This one also features the Mudhorn-branded Mandalorian armour.
Just recently, there have been a lot of new LEGO releases which could be considered ‘remakes’ of past sets, and this is one such set. It’s extremely similar to the 2020 set, both in terms of scale and design. But it does include enough changes and additions to be considered a new set and not just a 1:1 re-release. Unfortunately, those additions also see a much higher price point in comparison to the previous set. It’s probably the least exciting of the upcoming sets inspired by The Mandalorian & Grogu. The LEGO Star Wars Grogu (Mandalorian Apprentice) is available to pre-order now and will be released on April 26th.
