The lovable little green aliens make their debut in the first Toy Story film. Woody and Buzz first meet them inside the Pizza Planet Claw Machine. They were soon adopted by Mr and Mrs Potato Head and have appeared in all of the Toy Story sequels. The Toy Story Aliens have appeared in several LEGO® sets, but this is the first time we’ve been treated to a buildable version. Here’s a closer look at the LEGO Disney Pixar Toy Story Alien with Pizza Planet Rocket Ride set.

The set includes two elements, a buildable Alien and a coin-operated rocket ride. Much of the build focuses on the rocket, but the process begins with the Alien. Like many of the characters from Toy Story, the Aliens have become quite iconic, but their appearance is quite simple. Despite that, their LEGO counterpart is an interesting build. It uses some newer elements and recoloured pieces to replicate the Alien’s bulbous head and spacesuit. One thing you’ll notice is that Alien has a completely studless surface. The SNOT finish often makes builds feel ‘un-LEGO-like’, but it feels like it helps here to make the model feel more like a squeaky toy. One of the best features of the Alien is the ability to raise its head upwards. It’s only slightly movable, but it allows you to recreate the Alien’s ‘praise to the claw’ pose. On the opposite side of the coin, the use of the sticker for the Pizza Planet logo on the Alien’s spacesuit is a slightly different shade than the element it’s stuck to. As I mentioned in my look at the Slinky Dog set, the eyes feel a little odd with these latest buildable characters, but they aren’t as bad in person as they are in the box art.
Once the Alien is complete, the rest of the build experience is focused on the Pizza Planet Rocket Ride. This is inspired by the rocking coin-operated rides often found outside supermarkets. Technically, a similar ride does appear in a scene which takes place during Buzz and Woody’s visit to Pizza Planet. But the set is inspired by the overall space-themed restaurant and uses the same colour scheme as the eatery’s large rocket ship decoration. The rocket part of the ride has a nice retro feel but is oddly shaped, mostly due to the need to offer enough space to slot in the Alien figure.
But the best part of the set is its working mechanism, which powers the familiar rocking motion of these sorts of ride-on rides. In the best section is a simple gear system which includes a pair of Technic wheel plates. These are mounted in such a way as to push up the rocket each time the handle in the base is turned. The base of the rocket includes a long black brick, and despite the wheel moving over the underside of the brick, there isn’t any friction. It’s an extremely satisfying motion to power, and considering the weight of both the rocket and the Alien, it’s super easy to ‘power’.
Tying the set’s theming to the Pizza Planet restaurant is a slice of pizza, which is fun, but there is nowhere to place it, and due to the lack of studs on the Alien, it cannot physically hold it; instead, you can balance it on its hand. There are also a couple of fun Easter Eggs to find, one related to Andy’s psychotic neighbour from the first film and another often found in many Pixar films, which relates to an old classroom number.
The set could have just featured a lone Alien or maybe a couple of them without the ride. But it wouldn’t be as much fun. I guess it could be considered yet another display-focused LEGO build, but at least there is a hint of playability woven into the set thanks to the rocket’s rocking motion.
