72151: Eevee Pokémon Quick Look

As Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary, the beloved pocket monsters have made the leap from screens to LEGO® bricks with the first-ever LEGO Pokémon sets. One of the first characters to get the LEGO treatment is Eevee. Eevee made its debut in the very first Pokémon games. It soon became a fan favourite due to its cute base form and its ability to evolve into several new forms. Here’s a quick look at the smallest of the new LEGO Pokémon sets – Eevee.

Eevee is one of the original 151 Pokémon Which appeared in Pokémon Red and Blue, released in the Nintendo Game Boy in 1996. The Pokémon’s unique evolution traits were partly inspired by real animal evolution, in which creatures adapt to their surroundings. For Eevee, its evolution could be influenced by using certain items, depending on the time of day or even the weather. The LEGO version is based on the OG base Eevee.

Eevee 133

Eevee is a rather fluffy, fox-like Pokémon, and as we’ve seen before, creating fluffy textures with LEGO elements can be tricky. Eevee has a large area of fluff around its neck and a fluffy tail. The use of elements and how they have been layered around both areas does a surprisingly good job of replicating the Pokémon’s recognisable appearance.

The head section of Eevee includes four elements which feature printed detail. These include Eevee’s eyes, tiny nose and mouth. The set would have looked awful if stickers had been used, as Eevee’s face is spread across such a wide and prominent area. The face isn’t the only place to feature print detail. Two tiles are used on the rear legs to represent the pads on Eevee’s feet. On the subject of the legs, this is one of the set’s only low points. They are strong enough to allow Eevee to stand, but even the slightest move can disrupt them and cause Eevee to sink to its belly. Despite that, considering how big the head and tail are, the overall model is well-balanced.

Although the set doesn’t allow you to evolve Eevee, it still references its ability to become one of eight different evolved variants. Within the head section of Eevee, you’ll find 8 different coloured tiles, each representing the possible ‘Eeveelutions’. Once the Eevee model is complete, these become hidden, but it’s still a fun little Easter Egg for fans.

The set manages to capture Eevee’#s cuteness perfectly. The way the fluffy bits have been achieved greatly helps with that. As do the printed elements. The only section of the model which could have been better is the connection point between the tail and the body. These use one of the black clock joints. Despite being such a useful element, its availability only in black causes it to stick out like a sore thumb. Although it would push up the price, it would have been nice to have Eevee mounted on a small display base. But the joy of LEGO means you could build your own. LEGO Pokémon Eevee is available now.
