In the world of Sonic games, the large cast of characters often join together for a variety of fun activities. One of their most popular group activities is racing. Team Sonic and friends have been competing since the days of the Game Gear, but one of their most prominent racing endeavours has an indirect link to LEGO® history. Owners of the Sega Saturn may remember Sonic R (and its catchy theme song), which was developed by TT Games, who went on to create the LEGO games series. However, the two upcoming LEGO Sonic sets draw inspiration from SEGA’s latest racing game, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The larger of the new sets features two vehicles and sees another Sonic character make their Sonic debut. Here’s a look at Silver’s Car vs. Knuckles’ Monster Truck.

CrossWorlds builds upon previous Sonic racers and brings together characters from various Sonic games and animations, along with characters from other worlds. As with many character racing games, each driver is paired with a themed vehicle. Two of which can be found in this set.
Knuckles is one of the earlier additions to the Sonic line-up, joining the Blue Blur in a 1994 Mega Drive/Genesis game. In CrossWorlds, Knuckles is paired with the Land Smasher. But this LEGO version is actually based on the vehicles transformed variant. One of the many power-ups in the game lets you briefly transform into a Monster Truck. As the name suggests, this is a bulker vehicle, and it has wheels to match the vehicle’s bigger frame. Unfortunately, the plastic wheels look cool but don’t grip surfaces very well, so pushing the truck along sees it simply glide. The detailing found on the front of the vehicle includes several printed pieces. Which gives it licks of black flames.
Silver’s Car is known as the Neo Lightron, which is a variant of a similar vehicle featured in Team Sonic Racing. In comparison to Knuckles’s vehicle, Sliver’s car is much sleeker. The use of curved elements and the way they are mounted on adjustable plates gives the car a unique appearance. Much of the detail is achieved with the use of elements and different coloured pieces, but it does include a couple of printed pieces.
Along with the two vehicles, the set also includes a couple of additional pieces. In all honesty, they add very little to the set, but these include a simple set of start lights and a fun little tool chest, complete with a pair of Chaos Elmralds. They certainly match the set’s racing theme, but don’t offer anything else apart from being something else to build.
The set includes two minifigures, including Knuckles along with Silver, who make their first appearance as a minifigure. This version of Knuckles first appeared in set 76996. This is a surprisingly jolly-looking version of the Echidna. The dual-moulded legs work well for the character’s colourful footwear, and Knuckles’ spiky fists are achieved with a pair of glove-like fists that slip over the hands. But the star of the set is Silver. The futuristic hedgehog was introduced in the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game and travelled back from the future. The minifigure uses a brand-new head and is probably the most elaborate Sonic character head yet. The print detail on the torso is great, especially the back. I really like the gold detail around the arms and on the feet.
It’s great to see additional characters from the Sonic games continue to be introduced in new sets. I also like that sets are taking inspiration from the wider Sonic universe. Cars may not seem as exciting as robotic mechs and egg-based crafts, but kids love cars. They don’t need any sort of elaborate play features; simply zooming them around is enough. The LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog set, Silver’s Car vs. Knuckles’ Monster Truck, arrives on January 1st and can be pre-ordered now.
