40864: Fortune Master Set Review

Chinese New Year has been marked for several years with a selection of celebratory LEGO® builds. They vary in size and complexity, but they are always inspired by the strong themes of tradition associated with the Chinese New Year. Also known as the Spring Festival, it’s a time for renewal and good fortune. The smallest of the 2026 Chinese New Year sets is a mini Fortune Master. This features several symbols of good fortune. Here’s a closer look at the upcoming Chinese New Year set, the Fortune Master.

The Chinese New Year sets have become just as traditional as the occasion they celebrate. That’s down to the types of sets released. We are normally treated to a trio of sets. One small one, one inspired by an object and one which is more of a playset. This year’s smallest set is the Fortune Master. However, the figure does not directly represent the advent of a new year in Chinese culture, inspired by ancient masters who could foretell the future. As the Chinese New Year is all about offering good fortune and luck, the set is filled with traditional symbols said to bring them.

The focus is a chubby little chap known as the Fortune Master. He’s dressed in a traditional Chinese outfit which is built from red, turquoise and gold elements. These are coloured strongly associated with the Chinese New Year. The Fortune Master is built in four sections. The cloud-like base, the Fortune Master’s body, head and his traditional hat. Despite being built in sections, they are merely pieces put together to create the character and do not offer any form of play features or moving elements.

Along with the colours, the Fortune Master is surrounded by items closely associated with the arrival of a new year. These include a 2×4 printed tile to represent the red envelopes filled with money and given during the celebrations. A pile of old Chinese coins. These are represented by several printed 2×2 round tiles. Some are mounted on an angled plate, which makes them look as if the pile is overflowing. Finally, the set is decorated with various-sized Sycee. These were ingots often forged from gold or silver and were a symbol of good fortune. In modern times, they represent the same thing but are no longer used as currency.

Although the set lacks play features, it does have a basic form of customisation. The set includes three sets of eyes. So you can change the Fortune Master’s expressions with different 1×1 round tiles. Those not in use can be stored in the small white barrel found under one of the smaller Sycees.

The Chinese New Year sets have always been created to appeal more to the Asian market. Their use of similar colours and symbols may make them seem quite similar, but the Fortune Master is unique enough compared to past sets to offer something new. Although when compared to the other 2026 CNY sets, it does seem a little basic and slightly overpriced. But I do like the fact that it uses printed pieces instead of stickers. The Chinese New Year Fortune Master set will launch globally on January 1st.
