During the launch week for the LEGO® Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series Death Star set, those who purchased it will get an additional set. That set is a TIE Fighter. This can be combined with the Death Star by being placed in the battle station’s hangar bay. Just like the Death Star, its accompanying GWP set has caused some colourful opinions. But is the set a worthy reward for splashing out £900/$1000/1000€? Here’s what set 40771 has to offer.

Within the hangar bay area of the Death Star, there is a Technic beam used in the base of the floor above the hangar bay. This features three holes, which become the connection point to install the TIE Fighter hanging rack. This is largely constructed with Technic elements and forms a forked pair of arms. These become a cradle in which you can place the TIE.
The small Imperial fighter craft has appeared in many other sets. This version is quite simple in design. I wouldn’t go as far as to compare it to a 4+ set, but the build is very basic. The core of the TIE features very few elements; it’s the rest of the ship, which adds detail. So you place panels over the front and back of the TIE’s central section. Along with the two large fins, which form the TIE Fighter’s iconic design.
Along with the TIE Fighter and hanging rack, the set also includes a small hover cart. This includes some fuel canisters and some tool crates, which feature printed details. It has room to place a minifigure.
Speaking of which, the set includes three minifigures. These include two Stormtroopers and a TIE Pilot. They offer nothing new over other versions of the character. I would have liked to see the Stormtroopers swapped out for an Imperial tech or service droid. But these would have been a little too unique and caused even more anger, so I get why three generic minifigures have been included instead.
It’s no surprise that the GWP set, which has been created to accompany the UCS Death Star, has been scrutinised just as much. No matter what was offered, it wouldn’t have been good enough. If the GWP included a unique minifigure, it would annoy people. If it were a non-LEGO gift that annoys people, remember the Black VIP card with the UCS Millennium Falcon? If there was no bonus for purchasing the set, yep, you guessed it. In reality, it’s an OK set. It has little value without being combined with the Death Star. It does look quite cool when slotted into the gap, but I don’t think anyone would purposely purchase the Death Star just for the GWP. The set will be available to those who purchased the UCS Death Star set between October 1st and 7th. Although I have a feeling this could be extended, or we’ll see the GWP return several times in the future.
