The long-running and interconnected world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yielded some interesting LEGO creations. I love the MCU and its surrounding stories, which now bring moments from the Fox and Sony universes into canon. But in my opinion, when it comes to Spider-Man, those sets not based on the movies are far more interesting. This set is a good example of that and expands the newly introduced Marvel ‘streets’ sets. This set features a trio of buildings, including Oscorp, and a great lineup of minifigures, many of whom have only made fleeting LEGO appearances. Here’s a closer look at the newly released LEGO Marble set, Spider-Man vs. Oscorp.

Earlier this year, a set was introduced featuring a Brooklyn deli inspired by the Spider-Verse films. The building included connection points on the side and the ability to add additional levels, similar to the much larger modular range. A similar set has been released alongside the Oscorp set. All of which can be linked together to create a larger street scene. This set includes a mini mart topped with an apartment, a jewellery store also topped with an apartment and a taller structure housing Oscorp. These are all built in sections and create single buildings which are then connected with a pair a Technic pins and connector bricks. As these can be found on either side of the buildings, you can reconfigure them as they are linked together and add those aforementioned sets to create a wider Marvel scene.
The smallest of the buildings is a two-storey structure which includes an extremely small mini mart. It’s such a mini mart that it only has room for a till and a shelf selling three products. Above the mini mart is an apartment, I say apartment, it’s basically a room. This is connected to the Venom host, Eddie. Although a very small space, it does include a dartboard and computer, showing Eddie’s research into some of these fellow, super-powered folk. The inclusion of a chicken, should Venom need a snack, is quite fun. To make the street a little more exciting, a piece of street scenery has been included. This features an awkwardly placed American-style set of traffic lights and a yellow dumpster. This is a nice nod to the larger Marvel modulars.
The second building is also two storeys tall but wider, giving it a slightly bigger interior space. Unfortunately, the increased space hasn’t really been utilised. The excellently named jewellery shop has been robbed, as evident from the broken glass and the ability to pop off the shop’s window via a lever. But even so, it doesn’t appear that it was well stocked before the break-in. The apartment above also offers more space, but it’s less detailed than Eddie’s room. It only includes a bed and a painting of Miles with some spray cans. It’s a shame these spaces haven’t been given a little more detail.
Oscorp is the focus of the set, and so it’s much taller and slightly more detailed than its accompanying buildings. Set across four floors, Oscorp is mostly focused on scientific research. This is shown best on the second and third floors of the building, with various experiments on show. I do like the simple things like the Symbiote sample being tested, a beaker of green serum being heated up and the Green Goblin’s hover board. However, the space is still underused. The upper floor includes two play features. One is the ability to rotate a pod using the building’s tall (and difficult to include in photos) antenna, and the other is a lever which causes a spider-web rope on the outside of the building to move.
The exterior of Oscorp is probably the highlight of the set for me. The use of black, grey and green elements gives it a futuristic and foreboding appearance. These are complemented by a couple of sticker sections. One features the Green Goblin, and the other, Oscorp’s signage. Although these look great, as they are large stickers, they are quite awkward to apply. The exterior of buildings is dotted with various holes, giving you plenty of options to display the set’s minifigures in dynamic ways, although it lacks to elements to do so.
Rather randomly, the set also includes a chunky motorbike used by Miles. The vehicle adds an extra level of playability to the set, but it feels a little disconnected from the rest of the set. I’d much rather it had been left out in favour of more transparent display elements, beyond the lone one included. Green Goblin also includes his hoverboard. This can also be displayed inside the Oscorp building. It’s another simple object, which manages to get redesigned every time it appears in a LEGO set.
The set includes an impressive line-up of minifigures. The main Spider-people, aka Spider-Man, Ghost Spider and Miles Morales, have all appeared in previous sets. Of the three characters, Miles is the rarest, with this version featuring him in his hoodie, complete with hood elements. Since Sony’s infamous Madam Web film, the Julie Carpenter version of Spider-Woman has started to appear in sets. This is her second outing and a downgrade compared to her first appearance. It uses the same torso and head but drops the dual moulded legs for plain black ones. The rest of the line-up is far more exciting and includes characters making their LEGO debut and the others only ever appearing in one previous set.
Green Goblin has appeared in several other sets, but this version gives the villain a more robotic look. Previous takes on the character have leaned into his comic book appearance, but this one seems to take inspiration from the original Spider-Man films. Although not a direct copy of that Green Goblin, it’s unique enough to offer an impressive variant of the iconic villain. When the Green Goblin isn’t being evil, he’s doing business as Oscorp CEO, Norman Osborne. This iconic Spider-Man character has only appeared in one other set, and it predates the Marvel theme by almost 10 years. It’s basically just a guy in a suit, but you can tell it represents Mr Osborne. Although Venom has infected several sets and characters, this is the first time his alter ego has ever appeared in a LEGO set. The minifigure represents Eddie in his normal guise, but his Symbiote buddy includes a head emerging from Eddie’s back, achieved with a back bracket slotted over the neck. Although Eddie consists of previously used parts, it’s a great representation of the journalist. The bad guy line-up is finished off with Kraven the Hunter. The character has recently featured in another Sony Marvel film, as well as being in the latest PlayStation Spider-Man game. He’s only appeared in one other set, in which he looked like a failed fashion model. Thankfully, this new version fares better. The head used for Kraven is better, and the lion-themed outfit is rather cool.
The introduction of a new range of interconnected sets is interesting but not nearly as appealing as the larger modular buildings. As these are on a much smaller scale, they are less detailed and can feel a little sparse in places. Although Oscorp includes some interesting details, it’s still a little lacklustre in places. A version of Oscorp similar to the Daily Bugle set would be amazing, but obviously more expensive, and this set is already quite costly. Although some of the minifigures are rehashed versions of overly done characters, I do like some of the rarer additions.
