The Wizard of Oz remains a standout moment for the film industry, and even though it was released almost 100 years ago, the wonderful world of Oz is still captivating audiences thanks to Wicked. The prequel story focuses on Glinda, who becomes the Good Witch and Elphaba, better known as the Wicked Witch. In Wicked, the green-skinned girl has yet to fully embrace her villainous moniker but is shunned by many in Oz. So she escapes to a small woodland retreat, which is the inspiration for this set.
The set features a small woodland clearing built upon a small collection of lime green plates. These become the base for a wall of curved arches, which are woven between tree branches and other natural features. The use of the tentacle-like elements, leaf clusters and natural coloured elements gives it a surprisingly organic appearance. Some of the smaller details add a splash of colour, but they aren’t garish. Nor do they feel out of place. I wouldn’t say the set has many play features, but the various details and accessories can be used to recreate moments from the film.
The set includes two mini-dolls, which are both unique to this set. Elphaba may look similar to her appearance in the Emerald City set, but a printed overcoat covers her black and purple trimmed dress. Fiyero is also unique, appearing in his Captain of the Guard uniform, which is mostly green with gold trim. Both minifigures are faithful representations of the character from the film. They are joined by a pair of bunnies, which use the ‘Friends-style’ of animal figures, which I’ve never been a fan of them but they match the overall style of mini-dolls.
I like the organic nature of the set, the way the tree branches and natural elements have been woven into the scene looks great. It doesn’t really offer much in terms of play features, but it’s still a fun-looking set, especially with all the little details it contains. It evokes the same style as the old LEGO Elves sets.
