When Sonic and his friends aren’t speeding around taking on Dr Robotnik and his Flickies-powered forces, they like to chill out in their feature-filled motorhome. However, Sonic’s Motorhome doesn’t sound like an inspiring name for a set, so it’s given the flashier moniker of ‘Team Sonic Command Truck’. Unlike most of the other Sonic-themed LEGO sets, the Command Truck is a new creation not directly inspired by any particular piece of Sonic media. But it does have fun nods to the wider Sonic universe and the best two Badniks to appear in a set yet. Warm up those Chilli Dogs and take a look around the Team Sonic Command Truck, one of two new Sonic sets released this month.

Sonic will soon be taking to the race in Sonic Racing Crossworlds, but the Blue Blur is not really associated with vehicles. When you can run as fast as Sonic can, you don’t need wheels to get around. However, the Command Truck does take inspiration from both Sonic and Tails. It blends two different blues to represent Sonic, along with orange detailing for Tails. It certainly does look like an American-style motorhome. But inside is a little more flashy.
It opens up to reveal a kitchen area and a raised platform which rests on the roof. This features a play area, with a table tennis table, giant speakers and a games console displaying a familiar-looking game. The Chao Garden screen is just one nod to the Sonic games. Others include the Green Hill number plate, which also features the year Sonic debuted.
The truck also includes an area at the rear which houses a small Tails-themed ATV. The design is similar to ATVs from other themes, but is mostly orange to match with its rider, Tails Prower. You can deploy the ATV by pushing a lever found on the side of the Truck. This causes the ATV to push down and flip on the opposite side of the truck.
Due to the unique appearances of the Sonic characters, their minifigures are fairly similar across the various sets. The only variations you’ll find are a slightly different expression. So the three minifigures found in the set aren’t unique. Both Sonic and Tails have appeared in other sets, with Sonic featuring a sly grin and Tails winking. Metal Sonic makes its second appearance in a set. This particular minifigure is a great reflection of the character, although it feels a little disconnected from the rest of the set.
Fans of the earlier Sonic games will remember that levels are filled with robotic foes created by Dr Robotic. They are powered by tiny creatures called Flickies. The two Badniks found in the set offer more uniqueness. Badniks Burrobot and Caterkiller both debuted in the first Sonic game, making them an iconic part of Sonic’s history. They have made the leap from pixel to LEGO form perfectly. These are the best Badniks to appear in any of the Sonic sets. Caterkiller is particularly great, thanks to the way the body is joined together and its printed face.
The Sonic theme is an interesting one. The games are well known for their characters and locations, with many of the vehicles being associated with Dr Robotnik. So it makes sense to create something unique. The play elements of the set are fun, but for me, it’s all the little details. I love the printed pieces used for the number plates and the game console screen. Even the stud shooter on the side of the truck looks cool thanks to the transparent yellow tank. It’s a set I would have loved to have had as a Sonic-loving kid. The Team Sonic Command Truck is available now.
