Following a series of buildable helmets and masks inspired by iconic Marvel characters, earlier this year, the LEGO® Marvel theme introduced a new series of sets called the Bust Collection. These smaller character builds added a little more of the characters they represent, along with a minifigure. Following the Iron Man MK4 Bust Collection set, it’s the turn of the MCU’s Spider-Man and his Stark tech-powered Iron Spider-Man Bust.

Spider-Man is probably second only to Iron Man when it comes to the number of different LEGO builds the character has inspired. Just like Iron Man, Spidey sports numerous looks, but one of the most unique is the Iron Spider-Man suit. Making its debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter Parker wouldn’t use the suit until the events of Infinity War. The armoured suit uses nanotech to deploy spider-like limbs. It is these, along with the golden detailing, which make this version of Spider-Man so unique.
Unlike the Helmet/Mask Collection sets, these sets include the relevant minifigure. In the MCU, Spider-Man’s Stark-powered suit is referred to as the Iron Spider suit, as opposed to the Iron Spider from the comics. Iron Spider-Man has only appeared in a couple of sets; with the release of this set, it has appeared in more brick-built forms than it has minifigures. This version features a torso similar to the one included in set 76323, but adds print detail to the arms. The legs are plain but use a dual-moulded piece. In addition to the gold trim, the Iron Spider-Man suit also features a set of metal ‘spider’ arms. These are mounted on a piece connected around the neck of the minifigure. These are quite basic compared to other versions.
The bust is mounted on a small black plinth, similar in style to some of the other displayable sets, such as the Helmet Collection and Star Wars Starship Collection. This can either be constructed to include a space for the minifigure to be displayed along with the printed display plaque or just the plaque. If you choose not to include the minifigure, then the display tile sits in front of the stand. The instructions split off to detail both versions of the stand, but it’s super easy to change the configuration.
Although a lot of the detail of the suit is achieved with different coloured elements, some of the smaller details are added via printed pieces. These are mainly found on the mask, where several elements feature web print. The 1×2 half-round tiles used for the eyes are also printed. It can be difficult to align these properly, so take note of how the black pegs are positioned when building the core of the head. Although the suit features four arms, the choice to only include two works nicely. They can be positioned in different ways; the only issue they have is the use of grey click joints elements between the arms and their claw-like tips. But they are only visible from the rear of the set.
The Helmet Collection sets are great, but they are limited by the style of the heads of certain characters. Introducing a bust format opens up the possibilities of characters it could take inspiration from. Although this take on Spider-Man is quite limited in its on-screen appearances, the unique look of it makes it better suited to the set’s format. The multiple colours used on the Iron Spider-Man suit also make it a little more interesting to build compared to the Iron Man bust. The Bust Collection’s smaller format also means they are much easier to display. The pricing feels a little steep for what the build offers, especially has this feature has fewer pieces compared to the Iron Man bust, yet is the same price.
