As mentioned, brick-built train sets always provide a visual treat and can often be found on display at LEGO shows. Many builders use the LEGO sets featuring trains and track, but also expand them with other sets and accessories. LEGO City is the main source for many of the train-related sets.
Although the set doesn’t feature a train, it does include a section of train which can easily be incorporated with any modern-day LEGO train sets. It may lack a locomotive, but it does feature a rail-based maintenance truck. This little vehicle includes an extendable basket to help repair out-of-reach objects. The maintenance truck runs on the rails and has the relevant wheels to help it move along the tracks.
The exterior of the station blends both modern elements with more traditional architectural features. Something a lot of UK train stations do. The flourishes aren’t as ornate as, say, the modular buildings, but the set still features a few neat details. On the traditional side of things is a main section of the station, with stacks of candle rods bordering the windows and an elegant clock tower. For the more modern details, you can look towards the tower containing the lift and curved roof, which uses a series of panels often used to create shutters.
The building features several elements you’d expect to find at a train station. These include a small platform, a cafe stand, a waiting area and an office/control room. It also features a lift. This uses worm gears and platform elements that can travel up and down as they are rotated.
The set features a gang of minifigures, which are the usual fare you’d expect to find in a City set. They include a dad with his baby in a pushchair, a female traveller and a young girl, who oddly has a ticket and a digital travel card. The others are employees of the station and they include a cafe worker, a maintenance worker and the station master. It’s this elderly chap who is of most interest.
The minifigure uses a pair of crutches; this new element neatly nestles behind the arms of a minifigure. It’s another interesting way that LEGO sets show the differences people have in real life. I’d expect these pieces to appear in future sets.
Crutches are the only cool new pieces to be found in this set. The Central Train Station is also home to a pair of pigeons. I love LEGO critters, so anytime a new one is introduced is always a delight. Pigeons are almost as important to train stations as the trains, so it’s great to see them introduced in this set.
The set would make a great addition to any modern-day LEGO City train layout. It’s also a great starting point should you wish to create a larger station building. The new elements found in the set are fun, and it will be great to see where they pop up next. LEGO sets often give hints to future sets. Could the classic steam train featured on a piece of station artwork suggest we’ll be seeing an earlier style LEGO train in the future?
