One of the most common dinosaur species to appear in LEGO® Jurassic World sets is the mighty T. rex. Thanks to stand-out moments in the original Jurassic Park films and the Jurassic World trilogy, the T. rex has become the poster girl for dinosaurs. The popular prehistoric predator will return in Jurassic World: Rebirth. The latest trailer features a T. rex bothering a group of people enjoying a trip on a river, and this upcoming LEGO Jurassic World playset is inspired by that moment.

Even before the Jurassic World sets were released, T. rex dinosaurs were one of the most popular species to feature in the LEGO Dino sets. The same mould for those dinosaurs has continued to be used for those found in the Jurassic World sets. But what has changed is the colouring of them. The T. rex found in this set blends both brick and sand yellow with a splash of grey. It’s not vastly different to other T. rex figures, but it’s nice to have another unique variant.
Despite the film not being released until July, we know that there is a secret research island used by InGen to house some of the dinosaurs who were far too dangerous for the ill-fated theme park. A research team is sent to the island to collect dinosaur DNA to help create life-saving medication. What is unclear is why there appears to be a group of tourists on the island. Regardless of why they are there, if there’s a dinosaur nearby, trouble is assured. The biggest part of the set is a section of a wooden cabin and dock.
It also offers a couple of fun play features. These include the ability to smash the cabin apart, thanks to two sections of it being mounted on 1×4 plates with only two studs. The other play feature is connected to the raft. This can be clipped to a section on the right of the dock, pushing the plate, which forces the raft to leap forward.
Along with the dock, the set also includes two vehicles. The first is a popular feature of the Jurassic World sets and is a basic red and black ATV. It lacks any sort of Jurassic branding, but the colour would suggest it’s part of InGen’s fleet of vehicles. The raft used the raft element, oddly, it appears to be the wrong colour, as the one featured in the trailer is yellow. Both add an extra bit of playability to the set.
The set features two minifigures who appear to be unconnected to the research team set to the island to collect life-saving dino DNA. One of the characters, Teresa Delgado, is connected to the pair found in the Raptor Off-Road Escape set. Considering that she is being hunted by a T. rex, Teresa has an unsettlingly joyous expression. Her torso is fun, being similar to her younger sister’s. Xavier is giving off Ian Malcolm vibes, with his open short look. Unfortunately, the skin printing on a dark surface results in a very noticeable mismatch of skin tone between the head and torso. On the flip side, the skin print on the legs of both minifigures is much improved.
It’s quite a small set considering the price, but the inclusion of the T. rex will have pushed up the price. But with the current crop of LEGO Jurassic World sets available, it will be the only one to feature a T. rex figure, and at least it’s a unique version. The play features of the set are fun, especially the method of launching the raft. The minifigures are fun despite the iffy skin print on Xavier’s torsos. The LEGO Jurassic World: Rebirth set, T.rex River Escape, will be released on June 1st and can be pre-ordered now.
