It’s been 11 years since LEGO® Star Wars Microfighters were first introduced. In recent times, they have become a little less common, but it’s nice to see they continue to be released. The concept of this fun subtheme is miniature versions of Star Wars ships, vehicles and creatures, which also include a minifigure. Since their introduction, Microfighters have slowly increased in price but continue to be a good source for interesting characters. After the fun outrage caused by including Captain Rex in the last Microfighters set, this latest one includes a unique minifigure. Here’s a closer look at Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter Microfighters set.

Jedi Master Plo Koon sits on the Jedi Council, and we are first introduced to the Kel Dor in The Phantom Menace. During Order 66, Master Koon is taken out by his clone garrison. But additional Star Wars stories reveal he played a key role in the discovery of legendary Jedi, Ashoka Tano. The character has only appeared in three previous sets, with the last released in 2014. So Plo Koon’s LEGO return has long been overdue.
As mentioned, Microfighters are miniature versions of iconic vehicles from a galaxy far, far away. In this set, that’s a Jedi Starfighter, an arrowhead-shaped craft used by the Jedi with an astromech droid acting as a copilot. Plo Koon flew a blue and white colour fighter. This mini version of the Starfighter uses a darker blue compared to past ones, and it looks all the better for it. To capture the ship’s unique shape, the central section of it features much of its bulk with two fins clipped onto each side. These are then angled downwards to create the ship’s pointed slope.
The central part of the ship also includes the dome of Astromech droid R7-D4. Unfortunately, it is only the dome and the rest of the droid that are not included in the set. I do like it when a set offers a storage solution for weapons. Plo Koon’s lightsaber can be clipped to the underside of the ship, although it’s still quite visible.
Having only appeared in three previous sets, Plo Koon is a rare character; thankfully, his return is marked by a new head mould. In comparison to those older versions, Plo’s new appearance is a complete improvement. The new head is much plumper and appears less compressed. His outfit is quite simple, which reflects how the character is often shown. It would have been nice if he were wearing his Jedi Commander fatigues, but overall, it’s a great portrayal of the character.
Although the release of Microfighters has slowed and their pricing has increased, they are still decent little sets. The fact that it includes a unique and new version of such a rare character is the set’s greatest appeal. It’s also nice to see ships beyond the usual Rebel and Imperial ones featured in the Microfighters range. There is a desire to see more sets inspired by the prequel trilogy films, and this is a good example of one. Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter Microfighters set will be available from June 1st.
