The LEGO® Starship Collection officially began in 2023. However, the concept was introduced in 2020 with the release of the Nebulon-B Frigate. The midi scale ship was set to be an SDCC exclusive release to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. Instead, it was released through Amazon and LEGO.com, exclusively in the US. A similar style of displayable models formed another adult-focused Star Wars sub-theme, which began with the release of the Executor Super Star Destroyer. Similar to the inclusion of Kylo Ren’s helmet in the Helmet Collection, the self-imposed Supreme Leader’s ship is the first from the sequel trilogy to appear in the Starship Collection. In the opening moments of The Force Awakens, a small village is under siege from what we soon learn is the First Order. The latest evil faction in a galaxy far, far away has risen from the remnants of the Empire. As First Order Stormtroopers close in, a formidable black ship descends, and from it emerges a figure dressed in black, who is Kylo Ren. His ship is unlike any other from the Star Wars canon and features a massive wingspan which dwarfs the body of the shuttle.
The central section of the ship is one of the smallest aspects of the build, but it still manages to include a fun Easter Egg. If you have built any of the other sets in the Starship Collection, you’ll have found that they often include tiny recreations of characters or objects relevant to the films they are featured in. So, inside the core of the shuttle are two small stacks of 1×1 elements, which represent Kylo Ren and General Hux. Once the rest of the ship is built, they become hidden within.
The wings cover the largest portion of the build. The massive fins may look simple, but they require a surprising number of elements to create what is essentially a large triangular plate. These are connected to the body of the ship by three ‘stump’ clips. These allow the wings to be angled at different inclines. Depending on which way you slant the wings, the space required to display the set vastly fluctuates. Something that doesn’t affect the other Starship Collection sets.
The all-important stand is built separately from the shuttle. This includes the usual printed display, but the two 1×2 grille tiles. It’s a shame it doesn’t feature a commemorative tile to mark the 10th anniversary of The Force Awakens. However, you can replace one of the grilles with a Kylo Ren minifigure if you so want. The ship sits on top of the stand and is held in place with a Technic axle and two cap pins. Considering the scale of the wings, the stand does an impressive job of holding the ship aloft.
Of all of the ships which have been included in the Starship Collection, thus far, this has the lowest piece count. However, it’s not the cheapest set. In fact, it’s around £15/$20/20€ more than the set with the next lowest piece count. It features a few larger plates, which can push up the price, but nothing too extreme. So, in terms of value for money, this set doesn’t offer it. It offers an imposing display piece, thanks to the massive wings and an interesting build experience. Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle will be released on May 1st and can be pre-ordered now.
