40761: Sméagol & Déagol GWP Review

As the latest LEGO® Lord of the Rings set arrives, so too does an exclusive GWP set. If you purchase The Shire before April 8th, you’ll also get a smaller bonus set featuring Sméagol and Déagol. These two characters first appear in Return of the King during a flashback scene, recounting the creation of Gollum. Before being twisted by the power of the One Ring, Gollum was a simple Hobbit known as Sméagol. During the flashback scene, Sméagol was fishing with fellow Hobbit, Déagol, on a river near the Shire. But upon finding a shiny trinket beneath the water, Sméagol’s downfall began.

Similar to the Fell Beast GWP set released alongside the Barad-Dûr set last year, the latest promotional set isn’t directly related to the larger set, instead, it’s a nice companion piece. As mentioned, the set is inspired by a scene in the third Lord of the Rings film and shows how Gollum came to be. He was once a Hobbit from the Shire, but upon the discovery of the One Ring being by his companion, Déagol, its dark power took hold immediately.

Bottom section of the set represents the area beneath the water where Déagol is pulled under by a fish. There’s a bar plate here so you can clip on a minifigure and make it appear that it’s being pulled along by the fish. The upper part of the set shows the surface of the river and the small boat the two Hobbits are sitting in to fish. This is mounted on a turntable plate and sits at an angle. Although this is a small set, it’s nicely detailed and simple things like Sméagol’s rod string being clipped to a clear action peg elevate the scene. The tree, which is sitting on the bank of the river, is a little underwhelming, but it’s a minor part of the set.

Both of the minifigures featured in the set are unique. The two characters have never appeared in a Lord of the Rings set until now, which includes the first sets from 2012. Although they have a similar appearance to other Hobbit characters, the heads used for Sméagol & Déagol are unique and capture the characters’ expressive faces perfectly. Déagol’s dopey grin can be switched to show him holding his breath. Whereas Sméagol’s weary smile can be switched to show a far more menacing expression.

If the set is compared to the Fell Beast, then it certainly fares much better. It’s nicely detailed even for a small scene, and the two minifigures are a must for those who collect characters from Middle-Earth. I also like how dynamic the set is, thought has been put into how it can capture the moment from the scene. It’s a nice bonus to have if you are planning on purchasing The Shire. The Lord of the Rings: Sméagol & Déagol set is only available when purchasing The Shire before April 8th or whilst stock lasts.
