Mercedes-Benz is well known for its luxury cars but they have also been a part of Formula 1 since the early ’50s. Although their involvement in F1 isn’t continuous, they are one of the most successful teams, earning 8 consecutive Constructors Championships between 2014 – 2012 and 9 Drivers Championships. The current team was formed in 2010 and was previously known as Brawn GP. But before that, they were engine manufacturers. The car this Speed Champions set is based on was introduced in 2021. Continuing the previews are the entire LEGO® Speed Champions range, here’s a look at the Mercedes-AmG F1 W15 Race Car set.

Mercedes-Benz has been working with the LEGO Group since the 1960s but the partnership advanced in the 2000s when many of Mercedes-Benz vehicles inspired several Technic sets. They have also been featured in the Speed Champions theme, including an F1-inspired set based on the current race team, which was released in 2017. This particular set is based on the livery used during the 2024 championship.
Stickers are a divisive issue for LEGO fans, but they are a necessity for the F1 cars. The Mercedes-AMG is plastered with sponsorship logos, mostly stickers. However, some details are printed, such as a sloped section behind the driver. One thing I found impressive is how the mix of stickered pieces and coloured bricks matches up together. It’s tricky to match element colours with stickers, but it’s been perfected here.
This Speed Champions F1 car is a great example of how each set is different, not just the same build in 10 different colours. The inlet behind the driver is a little more substantial compared to some of the others. This is mostly to display the INEOS sponsorship which also adds a striking splash of red to the liveries’ darker tones. Around where the driver sits, you notice grey and turquoise detail. This is achieved with coloured bricks and stickers, surprisingly the colour match is spot-on.
The sections down the rear sides of the car are interesting. The fins which sit along the bottom edge of the car are connected in a usual manner. Just above them are a pair of angled column bricks. I did find they could be knocked loose a little too easily. However, they do look good, especially with the stickers on them and the quarter dome bricks used to top them.
As is the case with all of the new F1 Speed Champions sets, they feature a generic race driver minifigure. The Mercedes driver is kitted out in a completely black race suit, which sports the iconic Mercedes-Benz badge. The unique aqua helmet contrasts the dark outfit. This can also be swapped for hair.
The colour scheme of the Mercedes-AMG feels a little less exciting due to the darker colours. The same issue makes some of the unique details less obvious. There are some great details along the side of the car and behind the driver, but as they are all one colour, they get lost a little. But this is an issue with the source material, not the set. As mentioned, I did find the blend of coloured elements and the stickers which continued their detailing impressive. The colours match almost perfectly. This is the third F1 car I’ve built and it offered another unique build, which is impressive considering how similar the F1 can be. The Mercedes-AMG F1 W15 Race Car will take to the track on March 1st.
