Following the official launch of the 2025 Formula 1 season in London yesterday, it’s time to kick off the reviews of the new LEGO® Speed Champions F1 sets. The LEGO Group are no strangers to the world of Formula 1, for several years, they have worked directly with car manufacturers and teams to create F1-themed sets. But this is the first time they have partnered with the entirety of F1 and created a collection of sets featuring the full race team line-up. Since the LEGO Speed Champions theme was introduced, its goal has been to offer minifigure-scale versions of iconic car manufacturer’s vehicles. But don’t let the smaller scale fool you, although Speed Champions lack the mechanical wizardry of the Technic set or the scale of the Icons models, they still manage to pack in an impressive array of detail. So the Speed Champions range is perfectly positioned to celebrate the vehicles of F1. The theme has previously dabbled with F1 cars but the latest additions to the range offer all 10 race teams and LEGO replicas of their 2024 cars. Kicking things off is a preview of the Ferrari SF-24 Race Car set.

This year is a special one for F1 as the global race event celebrates its 75th Anniversary and Ferrari has been there from the start. Ferrari Scuderia is the only team to have competed in every F1 championship and holds the record for the most Driver and Constructor Championships. For the 2024 season, the team came second and this set is based on the 2024 race car. Although there are 10 F1 cars in the initial Speed Champions F1 collection, they are not merely the same set just in different colours.
One of the key features of any F1 car is the sponsorship logo plastered across them. These are portrayed in two different ways in the set. A small number of elements feature print detail but there are a large number of stickers to place around the car as you build. For the Ferrari car, these include logos for Shell, Ray Bans, HP and Santander. Some can be a little tricky to place but overall….
Like many minifigure-scale LEGO vehicles, the base of the car uses a chassis plate but this forms a fraction of the car’s overall size. For example, the iconic front section of the F1 car is a completely separate section which is fixed to the body of the car, greatly extending its length. But the most impressive thing about the set is the use of elements to create some of the vehicle’s unique details. Behind where the driver sits, you’ll notice a pair of car doors, these are used to hold a loose section which becomes an inlet. Spoons as wing mirrors are a nice touch as well.
The overall build of the car is similar to the McLaren F1 Speed Champions car released last year, but it also makes use of some new elements. The Pirelli-branded tyres from the McLaren set return but now include two sizes, with slightly wider versions used for the back wheels. The rear spoiler is crafted from the new 2×6 slope plate, first seen in the LEGO Ideas STEM set. There are also new wheel bracket mounts used for the front wheels.
Every F1 team has their superstar drivers but for their LEGO versions, they are driven by a generic minifigure. This includes a team-branded race suit, but apart from the team badge, it lacks all of the other sponsorship branding, which I think is for the best. A new helmet element has been introduced which matches the style worn by F1 drivers. This can be swapped for a hairpiece.
When I first received the Speed Champions sets to review, I was trying to decide how to deliver the reviews. With 10 individual, but similar sets I was going to lump them all together. But having built them, they are vastly different but extremely enjoyable builds. The mass of stickers can be tricky, especially on some of the smaller elements, but they are needed to truly replicate the livery of the race team. Despite the large amount of stickers, they do blend nicely with the printed elements and bricks they are applied to. Stay tuned for more LEGO Speed Champions F1 reviews.
