The LEGO Group Celebrates 89th Anniversary

Although the LEGO® System of Play was introduced in 1955, the LEGO Group has been in existence since 1932. On this day 89 years ago, The LEGO Group was founded by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. The company has remained a part of the Kristiansen family ever since passing down through the generations. Before focusing on the LEGO brick we all love to this day, the company produced wooden products, which rapidly centred around toys. One of the most iconic of the wooden toys is the Wooden Duck, which was recently recreated with LEGO bricks for a special LEGO House set. From those early days, the company motto has always been ‘Only the best is good enough’. Today, the LEGO brand is one of the most iconic and loved in the world, topping numerous lists for best toys, workplace, reputation and dedication to environmental causes. Happy 89th Birthday to The LEGO Group.

  1. LEGO actually owe a massive debt to Hilary Page. He was a U.K. inventor who patented his building bricks two years before Lego. And, apparently Ole Kirk and son Godtfred copied his designs and marketed them in mainland Europe in 1949. Lego eventually acquired the residual rights to the Kiddicraft brick designs in 1981. In an out-of-court settlement, Lego paid £45,000 to the new owners of Page’s company Hestair-Kiddicraft.
