The Billion Brick Race LEGO Movie Loses Director

Back in August last year it was revealed that Book of Life director Jorge R. Gutierrez had signed on to direct the upcoming LEGO® Movie spinoff, however the production is now in search of a new director, has Gutierrez has exited the role. Although little is known about this LEGO themed spinoff, it was expected to release in 2019, along with first direct sequel to 2014’s The LEGO Movie. Announcing the move via his Facebook page, the director stated:

“I would like to publicly and from the bottom of my heart thank everyone I worked with at Briksburg, LEGO  and WAG. These last 9 months were a rollercoaster of thrills to say the least. I met so many amazing new people and learned a ton from all these incredible artists, directors, writers, editors, producers and execs. I leave a better filmmaker and it’s because of you all. May our paths cross again. Gracias mis amigos. And as I toasted on my first day there, ‘May we slip n slide on the blood of our enemies!!!’”

The Billion Brick Race started as an original idea of Iron Man 3 writer Drew Peace and actor Jason Segel. Although little is still known about this potential new LEGO movie, the original pair behind it described the Billion Brick Race as “Modestly, hopefully it will be the biggest race movie of all time, imagine doing a race movie but having the ability to do it with LEGO. So part Cannonball Run, part Wacky Races, but with a real working class Rocky style blue collar vibe to it as well.” This description makes it sound a little like the recently opened LEGOLAND parks rollercoaster experience The Great LEGO Race, but until Warner Bros. Animation, Animal Logic or The LEGO Group provide more details of this movie and The LEGO Movie sequel, the future of big screen LEGO releases are still an unknown entity.
