LEGO MASTERS Begins Today On Channel 4

Whilst Bake-off may be getting all the headlines, another more impending Channel 4 show begins this evening, which may be of little more interest to us LEGO® fans. LEGO MASTERS is Channel 4’s latest LEGO venture, which sees the UK broadcaster joining forces with The LEGO Group to find the ultimate LEGO fan builder. Eight competing pairs of builders of varying ages will have their design, originality and construction skills put to the test during the course of the show.

The series is hosted by DJ and TV presenter Melvin Odoom. Each programme tests a wide array of disciplines from the playful to the technical to the unexpected and judging is led by Matthew Ashton, Vice President of Design for the LEGO Group. Joining Matthew in each round will be an array of expert judges from the fields of engineering, art and design and guest celebrity LEGO fans including Richard Osman, Bill Bailey and Dara O’Briain. In each programme, the teams who impress the most will progress to the next round until the finale, where just one pair will be crowned winners.

Tonight’s episode sees 48 pairs of teams take part in auditions to select the eight teams who will take part in the competition. The final pairs range from 9-year-old friends, to a pair of adult fans of LEGO (aka AFOLs), girl cousins, mum and son, father and son, uncle and nephew, Cambridge University engineering students and 12-year-old pals. They all compete in one supersized challenge where teams are given the design brief in advance. For this week’s Planned Build, Brick Feast, the teams must create a spectacular LEGO banquet, which must include one seat and at least one supersized masterpiece for the table. The seat is judged equally on its aesthetics, scale, and its ability to take an adult’s weight which is put to the test by Melvin before the judges decide which two pairs will leave the competition. The first guest judge is multi-award winning structural engineer Roma Agrawal, best known for her work on The Shard.

You can watch LEGO MASTERS tonight of Channel 4 at 8pm. It will be aired again on 4Seven on August 27th 11:05pm and on August 29th 1:15am. Plus you’ll be able to catch up on All 4, available online, on set-top boxes and games consoles. If the format proves successful, expect it to be picked up in other countries.
