LEGO City Missions Sets Review

After taking a look at the LEGO® City Missions experience it’s now time to take a look at each of the sets. There are three different Missions sets each themed around a different aspect of LEGO City life including police, space and wildlife rescue. The build experience for the sets is unlike usual LEGO City sets. In place of an instruction booklet, the build is guided by an interactive story with an emphasis on getting creative along the way. I go into more detail about the experience in my hands-on feature. For this review, I’ll be showing off what each of the sets offers in terms of physical bricks. As the aim of the experience is to add your own flourishes with the provided bricks, I’ll take a look at the buildable elements of the set as well as highlight some interesting elements found in each of the sets.

The core of the Wild Animal Rescue set is a 4×4 vehicle. It can be transformed with some of the additional elements found in the set. The different Missions delivered via the app, offer inspiration for those additions including building something to attract an owl, rescue a hare and capturing R E Fendrich to reunite a baby croc with its mother. The set also offers three minifigures. The first two can be mixed and matched to create a character and the other is called Maya. Other buildable elements include a traffic light, refreshment table and a building site. The draw of this particular Missions set has to be the various creatures it contains. They include an owl, a baby croc, a standard crocodile, a black panther cub and a new hare animal figure.

60354: Mars Spacecraft Exploration Mission

Set Name: Mars Spacecraft Exploration Mission | Set Number: 60354 | Pieces: 298 | Price: £24.99/$39.99/29.99€

For your mission to Mars, you’ll need a spacecraft to get there. This forms the main buildable section of the Mars Spacecraft Exploration set. As you proceed through the missions, you’ll be given the opportunity to jazz it up with booster rockets, wings and more using the extra elements included in the set. The rocket itself is the most complex of the three Missions sets and so the extra bits you can use to customise it aren’t has robust as other sets. There are three minifigures featured in the set, these use the new Artemis uniforms introduced with the latest LEGO City Space sets. Again these aren’t characters from the TV show and can be switched about to create your own avatar for the mission. Along with the space shuttle, other buildable elements include a cool little robotic dog, a pair of meteors, a grabber, an oversized fire extinguisher and a rocky mount to plant a flag.

Although all the sets are inspired by the LEGO City Adventures TV show, they are largely contained in the animated sections of the missions. This is the only set to include a named minifigure in the form of Duke Detain. He’s joined by three other minifgures. The base of the set is a police boat, this is a little simpler than the other two sets, but there are plenty more additional elements included in the set to transform it in various ways. Pop on some wheels to create a land boat or switch out the windscreen for a dome and you have a submarine. There are quite a few elements in the new super bright fluorescent yellow, along with a printed NEXO Shield police badge, these are not as exciting as the animals in the Wild Animal Rescue set but there are certainly some interesting pieces. Other buildable pieces include an underwater treasure trove, a jail cell and a display table.

The LEGO City Missions sets all offer a unique build experience thanks to the story driven instructions app. They each have plenty of interesting pieces. This is of interest to the intended audience of younger builders who will be able to get creative with them and for AFOLs, who can expand their element collection. The LEGO City Missions set are all available now.
