Next month will see not one but two new LEGO® Ideas sets released as today the LEGO Group officially reveals the Red London Telephone Box. The set is based on an idea by fellow Leicester resident, John Cramp and features a classic red telephone kiosk, once found on streets across the UK. Nowadays there are few and far between but can still be found dotted around, including in the centre of John’s hometown. To invoke the sense of nostalgia often associated with vintage telephone boxes, the set also features a cobbled street and lamppost. The set also offers the ability to switch the interior to reflect both the older style and the more modern telephone system. The set will be available through Insider Early Access on February 1st and will be available for all from February 4th. I’m genuinely pleased to see John get one of his designs turned into an official LEGO set. Well down, John. Learn more below.
LONDON IS CALLING WITH THE NEW LEGO IDEAS RED LONDON TELEPHONE BOX
16th January 2024: Today the LEGO Group unveils the iconic LEGO® Ideas Red London Telephone Box set, a classic British symbol, recognised worldwide. Released in the same year that the K2 Telephone Box celebrates its 100th anniversary, the new LEGO set is inspired by the iconic red and black structure that is a quintessential symbol of London. The perfect set for display, features an opening door, a light brick in the roof to illuminate the K2 Telephone Box when pushing down the top and a lamppost with flowerpots and a cobbled street, invoking a sense of nostalgia and an enduring connection to a city that seamlessly blends history with modernity.
Designed by John Cramp, from Leicester, England, as part of the LEGO Ideas programme – whereby fans can submit a design that other fans can then vote to be made into a real LEGO set. In a lovely twist that brings the set right up to date, the design also allows includes a stand for your mobile phone.
Talking about the new set, Michael Smy, Head of Street at BT Group said; “The K2 red phone box is seen as a British cultural icon throughout the world, and we’re delighted that the Lego Group are celebrating the 100th anniversary of its design with this model. Fast forward to today and whilst communications have rapidly evolved, the iconic K2 continues to play a part in communities through BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme. As we continue to build the next generation of communication networks, we’re proud that more than 7,200 phone boxes have already been adopted across the UK, repurposed into mini libraries and life-saving defibrillators, among others.”
