Dimensional Delights – Doctor Who

Later this year the BBC will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who and today they have officially launched the Whoiverse. The term has been used by fans for years but has been officially adopted by the BBC and will further expand the reach of this much-loved British Sci-fi. Today, Whovians can watch classic episodes of Doctor Who and various spin-offs such as The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and Class plus join past Doctors and their Companions for Tales from the TARDIS. Doctor Who has an interesting history in LEGO form. This first began in 2015, when a fan-created design inspired by The Doctor’s adventures, became a LEGO Ideas set. This opened the door for Doctor Who to inspired content for WB Games toys-to-life title, LEGO Dimensions.

LEGO Dimensions really embraced the world of Doctor Who, mostly likely due to TT Games being a British developer. This resulted in both a Doctor Who Level Pack and a Character Pack. These unique LEGO sets introduced a number of unique physical LEGO elements including a Sonic Screwdriver and Cyberman minifigure plus a brick-built K-9, Dalek and TARDIS. But the real highlight of the Doctor Who aspects of LEGO Dimensions was the digital side of things. Although the pack only featured the Twelfth Doctor, his many other incarnations were featured in the game, right down to each of their TARDIS interiors. Better still many of the Doctor’s friends and foes also appeared in the Doctor Who Level and Game World.

After both the LEGO Ideas and Dimensions sets, The Doctor’s LEGO adventures ended. However, a new partnership between the BBC and Disney, which will see new episodes of Doctor Who streamed on Disney+ outside of the UK could inspire the LEGO Group to bring LEGO Doctor Who back. The show is perfectly suited to a LEGO theme, with heroes and villains, plus multiple characters and eras to take inspiration from. We can live in hope, until then, you can watch past episodes of Doctor Who, spin-offs and other specials now on the BBC iPlayer and selected content on Disney+ outside the UK. New episodes of Doctor Who begin on November 25th.
