854011: LEGO Eiffel Tower Magnet Build Review

Around this time last year, LEGO® introduced a new range magnets. As well as offering them as simple sets of magnetic bricks, a special destination magnet build set was released in the Leicester Square store, before appearing across other LEGO retail channels. This set used the magnet as a base upon which a London Bus was built. You can check it out here. Now the LEGO Magnets have packed their bags and started out on a little globetrotting adventure, with the first stop being Paris, France.

The Build

As mentioned above the basis of the set is the LEGO magnet. On the first view, this looks like a standard LEGO brick, but it actually features a magnet, enclosed within it. It is completely and securely enclosed within the brick, making it perfectly safe for kids but as this is a display, it’s not really an element you would play with. As well as the 4×4 magnet brick, you get a handful of LEGO elements, a small sticker sheet and the instructions.

In a similar fashion to the London Bus magnet, the set is built upon a 4×8 blue plate, with a number of other elements used to a vision of Paris. Unlike the flat nature of the London Bus, this Parisian scene is a little more textured. It’s actually a clever little build, with a series of 1×1 Angular Bricks, acting as the base of the scene. These are neatly covered up with a variety of flat tiles, including a pair of 2×2 bow tiles. These portray the base of the famous French landmark, the Eiffel Tower. The actual tower spire is cleverly recreated with a towbar element and topped with a brick-built flag. I say brick-built as from the images on LEGO.com it almost looks like a printed piece or a sticker, but it’s a trio of 1×1 plates. I love the use of the Unikitty cloud, after making its debut in the Unikitty collectable series, it has appeared in many other sets. Finally, there is a 1×8 flat red tile, which is where you place a sticker featuring the Bonjour greeting. This is a thicker, matte sticker, which is tricky to reposition.

Overall

With LEGO stores popping up in many capital cities across the world, sets like this are perfect souvenirs for tourists to pick up. But it’s also nice to have the option to purchase them online. Certainly saves on the old airfare. As a build, it will keep you busy for a few minutes, but the end result is rather nice looking. Although a basic build, with minimal elements, you can tell it’s the Eiffel Tower. It looks nice next to the London Bus Magnet and I hope this is the start of more destination magnet sets, as they would make a nice on-going collection. The Eiffel Tower Magnet Build will be available from March 1st.
