76950: Triceratops Pick-up Truck Ambush Set Review

The T. rex might be the poster child of the Jurassic franchise but one of the fan favourite dinosaurs has to be the Triceratops. It’s one of the first dinosaurs we get a proper close up look at in Jurassic Park and although it hasn’t really focused much in the Jurassic World films, the triceratops will be featured in one of the upcoming LEGO® sets based on Jurassic World Dominion. As well as a new Triceratops, the set also includes another 4×4 type vehicle and four minifigures. Ahead of its release later this month, here’s a closer look at the Jurassic World Triceratops Truck Ambush set.

The dinosaur featured in this set is the triceratops. This first appeared in a similar form back in 2012 as part of the LEGO DINO theme. It later appeared in the Legend of Isla Nublar Jurassic World sets. The version uses the exact same mould and pieces to create the dinosaur. These include the body, four legs and the head. Although the shape is the same, its colouring is new, blending brick yellow with grey and dark red. It also looks quite gnarly with scars and marks all over the body, suggesting the Triceratops has seen her fair share of scraps.

There are two vehicles featured in the set – a small quad and a larger 4×4. The quad may be small but it’s a great little build. I particularly like the stud handles, these look much better than the usual clip handle on these sorts of vehicles. Plus it has room to seat two minifigures, although it is quite the squeeze.

The majority of the build is focused around a rather plain 4×4 vehicle. It’s easy to criticize these seemingly generic vehicles but they offer a familiar play mechanic, which is what younger builders are drawn to. Despite the plain exterior of the 4×4 it has a very clever yet simple play function in the form of a smashable bonnet. A plate is mounted within the front of the vehicle, which offers very little movement. But it gives just enough to pop off the bonnet cover of the vehicle when the front grille is impacted. It really is a neat little feature and has been achieved in such a simple way. I’m surprised there are no stickers for this set, not even a random and often for the sake of it, JW logo on one of the vehicles. Not that they are needed. The plain nature of the quad and 4×4 seems to tie into the ‘story’ of the set.

The set features four minifigures including two returning Jurassic World characters and two random goons. Little can be said about these, they both have suitably menacing-looking faces and the usual everyday clothing. Both henchmen have tranquillizer guns.

They are joined by two returning characters in the form of Claire Dearing and Franklin Webb. Both have previously appeared in previous Jurassic World films but they certainly look a little different. Claire in particular has long hair in place of the usual short or tied back styles. Franklin has appeared in very few previous sets, but he joins Claire and also looks very different. In place of his glasses, Franklin has a rather goofy set of expressions. Both of these characters are wearing all-black outfits, which appear to be so they can carry out some sort of stealth mission.

Review Round-up

Although on the surface this a quite a generic set, it does have some interesting features. Of course, the dinosaur will be a big draw for many but the rest of the set has some fun elements that will appeal to the intended fanbase and age range.

For

+ A unique dinosaur
+ Great play feature on the 4×4

Against

– Another costly set for the size
– Uninspired minifigures
